After visiting the Boat Show on Sunday SWMBO and I had a heart to heart and came to the final conclusion that we are not getting enough enjoyment from our Med boating and agreed we want to come back to Blighty - yes I know the weather etc etc. No sadness in this decision, we are both happy with it. (Regular readers will be aware of our flucuating moods on this but this decision is final)

However we don't particuarly want the hassle of bringing the boat back and see this as an opportunity to move up. therefore I would like to try selling in Majorca. Two questions

1) Can anyone recommend a good broker for my type of boat (and warn me off any known bad one's) please PM if you don't want to go public with your recommendation or criticism.

2) Is it worth trying BoatsandOutboards when trying to sell abroad?

Don't quite know what to do next, will probably take our time rather than knee-jerk into anything. Quite exciting really and we'll enjoy the Med until it goes.

Re: journey of a lifetime

why not drive the thing home? There's lots of calm day and you could hopppity hop all along the coast, and leave it in big marinas reasonably safe. Ok, it'll be a bit knackered BUT what a story eh. Then you can make oblique comparison to the weather here and "in gibraltar" or "in biscay" which is jolly excellent. Still be back for late season, and a winter of er happy misery.

If I remember rightly that one's already been done and people wouldn't want to read it all again especially as my swimplatform is not big enough to iron on whilst planing.

Re: journey of a lifetime

can confirm swim platform ironing was quite a spectacle, it was not the beer that did it, it was all the red bull....

tcm is right, drive it home, it will cost less than the brokers commission, er probly (wildly unsubstantiated comment), its a boat, go boating!

drive it hard all the way, think of the upsides, great trip, save brokers fees, save surveyors fees on new boat, save cost of replacing all the bits not present on new boat, save cost of sorting inevitable bits and bobs...

So what was the deciding factor MedDreamer?

Just a feeling really that we are not getting as much use out of the boat as we were at home and a feeling of envy when people say they are just popping to their boat at short notice.

It just feels too far away

I'll consider it Clive once I've sold although we may still want to charter so it might still be appropriate.

Re: journey of a lifetime

if you later need a Med boating injection you know where I am. May not be as brash as Mallorca, but still on the Med, with plenty of sunshine

Must admit we've been having similar thoughts to you. Have'nt seen my boat in Palma since early November and I miss just being able to pop down to the boat for a quick day trip on a crisp winter's day or to do some maintenance. However, I have to keep reminding myself that the weather really sucks here, for example, we had a glorious week in Majorca in October half term last year in 30deg heat whist the UK was being drenched
Regarding selling your boat, my limited experience is that Med brokers are on the whole useless. We had a Fairline Targa 48 in the South of France in 2003 which we tried to sell through the local Fairline dealer. He didnt even bother to put it on his website listing and, needless to say, it didnt sell. After 3 months I lost patience and shipped it back to the UK after which it sold very quickly through Walrus Yacht Sales in Southampton (happy to give you a plug, Eric!). I got a very reasonable return load transport cost through Peters & May and the whole exercise was definitely worth it
Shipping the boat back to the UK also gives you a much better chance of selling it privately

Very sorry to hear that Martyn.

What are you looking at next, and are you going to go back on Windermere, even with the future speed restrictions about to come into force, or are you thinking about a different area, Possibly up Narf???? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We first had this thought last year, as you may remember, and came to the same conclusion as you but the problem is the thought hasn't gone away and I don't think its going to which tells me that we are not really deep down happy with what we are currently doing.

Will probably look to charter early or late season in Majorca to extend the season.

Ooh yes, much better. Instead of a powerboat in the med sunshine, you should get a sailing boat in the lake district with beds nearly as comfy as a park bench and enjoy trying to find some wind on a lake surrounded by nice high mountains in summer weather conditions where if isn't raining, it's drizzling. Bliss!

OK, tho i agree about the nipping down to the boat a bit. I can do this whilse it's in the UK. Hm, difficult. Are there many jobs that involve erm being in charge but not doing too much work in the med, i wonder?

Sorry to sound like a broken record but to use a boat in the med and make it feel nearer you have to be able to travel easily, imho.

Mike I just read your post and wondered why you dont just nip down for the day this saturday. Then I got my OAG out and can see why. There a 7.40LHR, lands palma 11.00, so on your boat 11.20am. But the only evening return flights do not go to LHR, only LGW! So Palma only works if you're near LGW.

The best served airport in the med (by a wide margin - just flick thru OAG) is Nice. So your boat has to be there. I'm going for the day this saturday - will be on boat 10.15am and will step off the boat 7.15pm - a full day. That's winter timetable, summer flight times give me an extra hour on the boat. I use Luton airport becuase 20min drive home but you can daytrip Nice on more or less the same schedule from LHR too, and from LGW and Liverpool (and I think Coventry, using Thomson flights) on the summer timetable

So imho base your boat 30mins cab max from Nice. That's about 12 marinas I guess
