Bristol

Hmm, you can go, but I think the mistake people make is stopping at that point in the analysis. Imho it's not about whether there's a flight, what matters is that there are several flights morning and evening, so you can go for the day, or go friday night to sun night, or sat am till sun night, etc. Bristol has one flight each way per day, mornings only....not enough choice imho..... and thus the boat would feel "far away"

Can't say I am suprised by your decision after reading various posts of yours over the last 12 months. I agree with JFM and NAT Nice or Alicante best bet for ease of traveling. trouble is, like me you were used to nipping to the boat when the mood took you and that is something you can't do unless your less than two hour drive away. I had an afternoon onboard yesterday, got there 11.45am left at 15.45pm home for tea 16.45pm. Had a great day pottering around the boat in the rain. fixed my VHF (which as you know is a must on Windermere) and a few other jobs that needed doing. We considered a move with the impending 10mph closing on us fast, particulary looked at Largs but decided against due to a 3-4 hour drive. Loads of people talking of buying a rag thing on Windermere. Went on a Hanse with some friends who were thinking of buying one a couple of months ago. Bored the hell out of me. After an hour we had travelled just passed Ferry Nab. And as TCM states the accomodation is cack compared to a cruiser. Have you looked at the new Bayliners ? maybe you should come back to the fold....

Re: Comparisons re England to Spain.Relaxing day out.?

So on the boat at 9.00 eh.Lets work that back.
2 hours from landing clearing customs and taxi to boat.
2 hours+ flight down.
Around 1 hour each for gettin up driving to airport parking car booking in and then hanging around a bit.
Lets call it 8 hours.
Last flight back about 9 ish so got to pack up boating around 6 to catch flight to get you home at 12 or mebbe 1AM.
9 hours boating and 16 hours to travel.

Hi Martyn - I remember you posting your doubts on here 18 months ago (or more!). Far be it from me to persuade you otherwise, but this Scptered Isle hasn't stopped blowing a hooley since June last year...and unless things improve, you may end up getting the same usage due to rubbish weather!

I'm saying this coz I'm sat at my desk longing for sunshine while the F19 outside is busily trying to destroy my trees / house / garden / workshop / boat / anything.

Still, enough of me matey...your idea of trading up will certainly add a great deal of sparkle to your decision. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Cheers
Dave

Re: Comparisons re England to Spain.Relaxing day out.?

Hang on! Only confirmed pisserabouters would travel like that.

In the real world you:
Live 30min drive to airport
Always park in short stay and never prebook.
Always aim to get to checkin desk 10mins to spare - that's 40mins before takeoff for an Easyjet flight
Always book Club if BA or jostle for a frontish seat on Easyjet, so first off plane
Never take hold baggage
Customs is non existent for all practical purposes, so you're in taxi within 10mins of the plane door being opened
Organise things so taxi to boat max 30mins

This saturday morning I'll leave home 6am and be on the boat 9.40am. That's a bit worse than driving to UK S Coast (depending where you live) but it will be calm and clear blue sky sunny.

Re: Comparisons re England to Spain.Relaxing day out.?

Learner is there at the mo. He reports clear blue sunny sky. Air temp is cooler of course than summer, 10-14 deg approx range. And sea is too cold to swim, though still warmer than UK sea in the summer

Re: Comparisons re England to Spain.Relaxing day out.?

Very pleasant then. As a matter of interest we are off to Lanzarotte two weeks today, weather there at mo is 20-21 which strangely is comparable to costas which according to my weather search is also 20 ish. Hope it picks up a bit cos it's normally hotter than that in Canaries this time of year.
Ian
PS
JFM Whadya mean can't swim in it. If it's warmer than UK sea in summer then it's swimable. Course we swim in Windermere which is bloody freezing even on hottest of summer days so us northeners must be tough /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Comparisons re England to Spain.Relaxing day out.?

Right again Oldgit. But as you probally know from previous posts I never go for less than 8 to 10 days every month. But saying that I would not hesitate to go for a weekend, but not for a day trip.
Ah lets see this Sunday leave home 04.30 45mins to Gatwick park car £37.00 for 8 days & check in(no baggage) 35 mins. Go into servicair lounge for orange juice & coffee & read papers unwind ect all for zilch. Board plane stretch out on extra legroom seats & go to kip for duration of flight. Plane lands 09 55 but nearly always 20 mins early straight out of airport into prebooked hirecar 120euros & usally on boat by 11.00 takes a bit of time 61/2 hrs in real time yes, but not at all stressfull if you work it right. Flight cost £83.00 return inc tax. Weather at moment is about 60 to 64f during the day dropping to 45 to 50 at night & at this time of year the sea is generally calmer than June July & August
I personally dont think you can beat it. After the sunny warm clime & practically no tide & such to worry about it makes boating in the cold & wet very unattractive, also there none of the mobo vs raggie thing we all seem to get on just fine. that alone is worth the trip. Dont knock it untill you try it. Unless you already have in which case I withdraw the last comment.
cheers ..........Nat.
