have seem adverts for add on self tailing to standard winches, can't remember what they were called, but I think they are hard rubber discs that grab the rop as it comes off the winch.

Hs anyone any comments? Are they any good? Will they hold the sheet as well as a standard self tailer?

'Winchers' I think they are called. Try a search: there were several posts about a year ago. My decision was that they would not offer much improvement.

We've got winchers.
Yes they work, no they're not as good as self-tailers, but they are a fraction of the price!
Main drawback is that if you're on the winch on your own, you need to keep pulling the rope tail off the winch as there is no 'stripper' as on a self-tailer.
But they provide a big improvement on nothing at all and are well worth having, IMHO.

Answers to your questions:-

Slightly better than nothing.

Nothing like as good as a proper slf-tailing winch.

Most who have fitted tham seem to have taken them off again, more in sorrow than anger.

Have a look at the Antal range for reasonably priced and engineered winches.

For the past two years I have used "winchers" on my Pegasus 700, and found them to be fantastic! They are: Easy to use
Grip the main sheet well
Easy to release when finished.

I even used them for the lines holding the boat to the cradle on her berth, and I have never experienced any problems at all with them.
