Self (build) steering

I saw a design for a wind vane self steering from Walt Murray on http://www.mindspring.com/~waltmur/Self-Steering/

Does anyone in this community have any experience with this gadget???

Looks not to bad to me being permanently short of cash. It probably want stand a F8 but then again i dont intent to sail in F8 if i can prevent it.
