I seem to be using self amalgamating tape in more and more applications - e.g. rope ends, sealing external cable connectors etc.
I have a (very) small prize for the most original suggestion about wizzo uses for this stuff and the cheapest way to buy it.

Yes, maplins have it, in assorted sizes and colours, although I used to get mine in Holland and still have a bunch of it, I use it for electrical connections aswell, when I crimp two wires together, I slip it over the joint and with a heat gun heat and seal the joints, stops any corrosion, you need to use a heat gun or even a hair dryer, held very close on full chat! Its really simple to use. You can also use a stuff called dip and whip, which is basically air drying plastic, you just dip the end of the rope in the tin and allow to dry, you can dip it a few times, to get a decent thickness. I also use it for coating the handles of pliers etc. It's called "dip and whip" for marine use and "dip and coat" for non marine use, same stuff!

Wouldn't recommend using it to make an ad-hoc male contraceptive, if that's the sort of thing you had in mind.

I use it quite a lot between metals to prevent galvanic corrosion.

Don't tell anyone but the threads on my galvanised turnbuckles get a coating of lanolin and then a winding of self-amalgamating. The lanolin stops the threads from rusting and the tape stops the gloop from going all over whatever comes into contact.
Also... makes a good finger bandage... doesn't come undone in wet like elastoplast.
Buy from RS.

How to get some cheep? Go in to a satalite instal/repair shop and ask one of the engineers the price for a couple of feet from a roll.
