Hi,

I understand that you can get 'self-adhesive' foam-backed Vinyl & carpet headliner.

I ask because I want to know how good these are at staying up.

I live on my boat and I have no space to do anything, and am unable to move everything out to make enough room to work (Very small boat).
And if spraying adhesive onto the material out on the jetty (Especially foam-backed vinyl) it would be a nightmare getting it back into the cabin without it sticking to itself.

I have in the past put some insulation up and got spray adhesive everywhere, and contrary to belief it's not that easy to remove, especially off vinyl, not even with acetone!

So is this self-adhesive headliner any good (and would you still need to spray adhesive onto the GRP as well .. I expect not)

Thanks,
Indy

Some of our headlinings were replaced with this by the previous owner. Over our 12 years of ownership a few edges have come adrift but these are easily reattached with a little carefully directed spray adhesive. The main downside is that it makes a good substrate for mildew to grow on and is it not easy to clean this off.

Hawke House in Gosport who supply headlinigs and adhesives, have an informative guide here. They sell a double-sided self-adhesive foam underlay for non-foam backed head-linings that might do what you want

Many thanks for your comment typhoonNige, and yours Hoolie,

Hoolie, my question is directed at people who have used self-adhesive headliner, not to those who sell it.

I just need to know if people who have used self-adhesive headliner (Foam-Backed Vinyl or Carpet) think its any good.

I am curently in the process of replacing some of the foam of my vinyl foam backed headlining. The original is 23years old, so the foam is dust. I'm using the Hawke House double sided self adhesive sheets (750x1000) and all seems good so far.
BTW, removing the dust/foam from the vinyl is easily acheived using the orange rubberish/cloth gloves. A steel brush works well on the grp to remove not only the dust/foam but also any none adherring contact adhesive. The areas currently failing are due to water leaks/failing seals round widows and deck fittings. If there is any sign of leak, fix it first otherwise the headlining will demount itself in about 2 seconds flat! (don't ask me how I know)

I think you were a bit dismissive of Hoolie’s suggestion, the Hawke site has a useful guide to headlining fixing, which Hoolie gave the link to, and not just a sales site.

Perhaps, but the HH guide gives some useful info on suitable base adhesives for each type of head lining. Not by any means obvious!

Hi Praxinoscope,

I am sorry if you think I was being dismissive of Hoolie's suggestion, I wasn't, I just do not need a sales site, nor do I need a guide from a retailer on how to fix self-adhesive headliner.

All I need is for people who have used self-adhesive headliner to give me their views on whether or not they thought it was any good.

I wish someone had alerted me to this very informative guide before I commenced the nightmare, extremely time- consuming job of headlining my previous boat!

Re-reading your OP you didn’t actually specify that you only wanted comments from those who had used self adhesive linings, your OP was more general.

I think he's maybe new to forums, and doesn't realise he has to ask specific questions if he wants specific answers. He perhaps also doesn't realise that giving shirty answers to people who try to help might deter other posters who might be able to help.

Jeeeez!!!!

I asked if self-adhesive headliner was any good, surely you understood that this question was directed at people who had used it, or knew someone who had used it.

No where in my original OP did I ask for a supplier, or for info on how to fix it.

Please feel free to respond as I am sure you will.

Well thank you registered users for all your help and support, I'm amazed that anyone would want to join a YBW forum if all you are going to do is treat them the way you are treating me.

Pretty disgusting actually!

I have used many forums in the past and do know how to ask the right questions, I can't unfortunately account for the likes of you!
Note: Three people who commented on this thread have been really nice, including Hoolie

However you win I may as well close this thread and open a new one, where hopefully I will meet with a better class of person ......... Now that's being shirty!

Indianajones:

Forums are like a water cooler conversation. Some will answer your question. Some will relate a story. Some will offer advice about something slightly related. Someone might be rude, but most will not.

There is no need to respond to anything directly. Just let it slide off. Thank people that helped. Understand that any advice that was given was offered by strangers and was free; in other words, maintain realistic expectations. I do have some experience with this, but now I feel sure it would not be appreciated. (The short version is that it did not stay up nearly as well as contact cement. I'm not a fan of spray adhesive for this.)

If you think this forum is direct, try Sailing Anarchy, where unrestrained profanity is normal.

Hi VicS,

I thought so too, however I was advised to open another post and be more precise in what I was asking!

Unfortunately YBW will not remove the previous post.
