Self-Adhesive Foam-Back/Carpet Headliner

As the author of the original post i will no longer be responding to comments made here, please consider this thread closed.

Oh.

Many, many years ago I tried SA carpet squares. They did not stay up. They are meant for flat surfaces and staying down. Additionally, carpet must resist distortion when shoved sideways by foot traffic or it would buckle. Thus, the weave and backing are designed to resist complex curvature. In a nutshell, it is just the wrong product for the application.

What does work are boat and RV specific products with a much looser backing, designed to take complex curves. Spray adhesives are easy and not hard to use in a confined space with good ventilation and covering surfaces with sheets etc. You do NOT spray the pieces outside and carry them in. That would be fun to watch. You spray them as they are applied, give them a few moments to tack, and them roll them up. I'm sure there are videos.

Re: Has anyone used Self-Adhesive Vinyl or Carpet Headliner

Hi VicS,

I thought so too, however I was advised to open another post and be more precise in what I was asking!

Unfortunately YBW will not remove the previous post.

It is true that you cannot delete the original post in a thread , but you can edit it or delete most of the original text.

Shouting very loudly that you wont respond to any further comments is bound to get up peoples noses.

I'm surprised though that FAT Mike and his colleagues wont remove the previous thread for you, but I guess they dont work on weekends.

Hi VicS,

I've only just put that comment on the previous thread since you mentioned it.

I thought it would be a good idea since It would be pointless for people to continue commenting on a thread which I would no longer be viewing.

Highlighted in RED just so people could see it better, not shouting.

Having spend many dreary hours in a cramped position scraping off the residue of adhesive-backed vinyl from my forepeak, and cursing he who originally fitted it, I would never use it out of consideration for those who will one day own my boat. :(

Hi Poignard,

Interesting, I must admit I hadn't thought that far ahead.

Just another quick question, are you also including spay adhesives in your comment, or is there something in the adhesive used in self-adhesive headliner that is more difficult to remove.

Many thanks, Indy

I don't know what method was used to attach it. It was in the boat when I bought here and it was beginning to fall away from the hull. I pulled the rest off and this left a gummy residue that i had to scrape off by hand. None of the common solvents helped but in any case I didn't want to harm myself using solvents in a small space. So I downloaded some talking books and music and got on with scraping it.

When I had got it all off I painted the grp with Dulux bathroom emulsion.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.
