Second night at anchor..

here in Croatia we stay at least 2 of 3 nights on anchor, night swimming and all that,..great fun,
sleeping at anchor is part of the boating experience here for all boaters, big or small, raggie and mobo...
unlimited number of sheldered bay's

swmbo's anchor alarm app, helps in sleeping well,
but even without it, never had a problem, (probably due to the wine ;-) )

We have spent many nights anchored. Same advice with alarms, settling the anchor etc. but I would had 180 swings. Check the wind forcast to see if it will stay put on the same direction as when you dropped it. A 180 swing CAN tip the anchor and let loose even if it was deep in. If you want to get a new anchor get one that will end up on the right side no matter from which angle you pull it. There are also many tests on pull loads and anchors are not born equal! I currently have a Rocna anchor. I have some results of a test, will try to put it together and post.

Also when you anchor just seeing good sand is not enough, you don't know the depth of the sand. So as you pull, pay attention to sound telling you the anchor is being dragged on something hard. Once you know how it sounds you cannot miss it.

I still remember the cold sweat I broke into when I popped my head through the hatch and after five or ten seconds to get my bearings I ralised we were heading out to sea. In the dark, going backwards. Happy to say my technique is improving though.

Wow, that must have been quite scary!! Was it just a question of lifting the anchor and then resetting or did you leave the anchorage and head back to a marina?

We love spending nights at anchor.

My peace of mind has been increased by replacing the anchor light bulb with an LED dusk to dawn Jobby, as they are now available for a few quid.

We also always put the ball up in the daytime.

As luck would have it we drifted into some shallower water and the anchor caught hold again, just as well really as we were heading straight for a raft of 40' sailboats. We were only three or four boat lengths away from them when we came to a halt.
