When a beginner, I took all the safety advice, and put a pair of paddles on my boat. As an ex kayaker, I really should have known better.

A snall outboard would make very little difference in a reasonable current to most powerboats, so what use would a paddle or oars do? You are following safety advice to an extreme if you think paddles are of use, and oars won't work without rollocks, which rhymes with the advice

I've rowed competively, kayaked, surf skied and I have used paddles on sailing boats with no engine up to 18 foot when the wind has died. The secret is not go against the current as you only have to get to safety, not all the way back home.

There is no reason why the boat in this incident should not have rowlocks fitted if there is no room for any other type of auxiliary - it was smaller than a lot of rowing boats. Too many people these days seem to accept no responsibility for doing anything for themselves and are quick to criticise others for not doing it for them

I am surprised at the lengths you are going to defend a couple of idiots. What other safety advice would you choose to ignore now that you know better?
