Surely the right gadgetty thing to do is to get some night vision goggles? pref. the strap onto yer 'ead type of thingys that you see pics of special forces using. More fun than a measly old searchlight!
<<such a comparison illustrates your marked lack of knowledge on matters maritime>>
Surely Byron, this sentence could have been ended one word earlier? Or perhaps three?

What do you power your 5kw light from?
If it's 12v presumably you use the supply leads to heat the cabin as well, I make the current drawn 416 amps, that's some heavy cables, not exactly portable.
It is 240v, I ran it in the Marina when on Shore Power to see what it would do/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif. Quite impressive really, and it "only" draws 21amps from the 240v supply.
Don't worry I won't/can't use it again!!!!.
And Byron, would you like a secondhand 5kw searchlight? You could use it scare boats away from your moorings!
I'll have it, just need abigger generator /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif I am doing my advanced course soon so will be allowed out in the night, I could certainly see my way up the river Medway with that /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Yes, but speaking as an expert, cough cough, they won't help with the fog. For that you'd need Thermal Imaging and even then it's effectiveness would be very much reducted by the temperature blanking effects of the fog.
