Sealing the water tank hatch

On my boat the water tank is under the quaterberth with a aluminuim hatch (diameter 8 inches), in pre-season inspection the seal (rubber o-ring)has perished. Instead of trying to find the same seal (very unlikely to find) I was wondering if anyone knew of a good rubber sealant I could use. Could I use normal bath sealant applied in the recess?

Any advice is greatly received.

Go to a good engineers merchant, such as BSS, or FWB in stoke on trent, and buy o ring rubber by length + special glue to stick the ends together. highly reliable. If you use a sealant / mastick the lid will be extra difficult to remove next time.
