Hi,

I want to seal an untreated teak cockpit table to protect it from wine stains, grease etc. I’m getting a cover made for the table when not in use.

I’ve heard that varnishing teak can be problematic due to the natural oils in the wood.

What product do you recommend please?

Personally I like Deks Olje. sand the surface until smooth, wipe down with white spirit, apply Deks Olje 1 wet on wet until saturated. Leave to dry for 3 days and then apply Deks Olje 2. It’s glossy and can be made more glossy by a light wet sand before the last coat. The coating is flexible so doesn’t crack as much as varnish and is easy to refinish after a few years as it doesn’t need to be removed.

If you are keeping it covered then teak oil works well if you apply lots of coats initially and refresh once a year. I did this for the first 4 years but then rubbed it down, degreased and used International Woodskin which in addition to giving a sheen finish was much more durable.

We use Semco available force 4 chandlery and by online elsewhere on our teak table and exterior rails. We have a cover over table so recoat annually . Not certain I would have time or crew would be happy to use if we had teaks decks but luckily we have Flexiteak decks and you can match semco colour choice to decks for the table or cockpit coming. No need to use hard chemicals to prep for re coats on rails -just use washing powder and green meany to clean down if needed
