Sealine Sales

Re: Sealine in Trouble ?

Sealine have been operating for some time with a good bunch of dealers who have always offered a very good service IMHO.

Why should they upset those people to do a deal with a BIG player?

I am sure the dealers sell a lot of the bread and butter boats (S25, S29, SC29) as well as the top of the range as well.
So maybe just a few more dealers about with BETTER back up from Sealine themselves.

Does look like a cost cutting exercise though.

Re: Sealine in Trouble ?

...Hmmm. Without Hamble, there would be no South Coast dealer. Needs to be somewhere with clear access to the Solent for the bigger stuff. How about not too far from Chichester ? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Sealine in Trouble ?

The previous boss (von Sydow) was a manafucturer. Current MD Rick Stone is a Finance man: cut him up into small pieces and you'll find coins, notes, and excel spreadsheets, with not a hint of red diesel anywhere.

I wonder where he'll turn his attentions next ? This year's Sealine Santa is wearing black and holding a scythe. Chippedy Chop. Just me and my little knife: snip snip, slice slice.

I might sound upset, but I have first hand experience of the chaos that can be caused by a Finance guy ripping the guts/morale/spirit/call-it-what-you-will out of a company, and I'm hoping this doesn't happen. Sealine doesn't need to be an English Sea Ray.

Couldnt agree more about the money men.
Having the same problem with German parent company at the moment.
No consideration for market strategy or future sales growth.
Make dosh now think about other things tomorrow.

Hopefully this will not be the way with Sealine, though I am sure there are plenty would like to see otherwise.

Re: Sealine in Trouble ?

I tend to agree with you. Accountants should'nt be let anywhere near the top of any company. They dont have the vision to do anything but cut costs
However, if its true that the Hamble operation was losing money, it must have looked awful tempting to shut up shop and tell an experienced dealer like Peters to get on with it. I dont know whether Sealine owned the Hamble site but it must be one of most prime development sites on the S Coast with the appropriate consents. Maybe this was a clincher

Re: Sealine in Trouble ?

I thought the moorings were owned by the 'Marina' opposite.
Can't rember the name 'RL' 'CL' Marine or something ?

Re: Sealine in Trouble ?

Re: Sealine in Trouble ?

Mike,

It depends how insular the accountant is! I have come across a few who have gained commercial skills and turn out great at their senior mgt job. Mind you I was at Sainsbury’s when David Sainsbury (an accountant) took over. In three years we went from number one to number three. He destroyed all the value in the brand and the rest is history.

As for Sealine it looks like a standard US Shakeup. Every few years a Senior Manager gets his hands on a new business unit and wants to leave his mark. It is happening to my company (again) at the moment. Thankfully we do not make boats or sell them. We prefer to market big hairy monkeys.

I still have issues o/s since April, though they are now being dealt with a little quicker (funny LIBS is coming up) and Phil has only just found out about the problem. i think there may be some design adjustments coming up.
That apart i think i made it very clear i am delighted with her.

Re: Sealine in Trouble ?

Heh, heh! I knew that comment about accountants would flush them out

Re: Offical press release

This is from news page on the forum.

"Sealine International has announced that it will exit the new boat retail business, effective 31 December 2005.

"Sealine's great strength is manufacturing world-class sport cruisers and motor yachts," explained Rick Stone, managing director of Sealine. "It is extremely rare for a boat manufacturer to operate its own retail business, and after reviewing the situation we have concluded that Sealine's retail sales are best managed by our world-class international dealer network."

"We will continue to operate our sea school, service and boat brokerage operations, but the time has come to exit the retail business and focus on our core competency in boat manufacturing," Stone explained.

The closure will affect Sealine's new boat sales operations only, and will impact Sealine employees located in the United Kingdom, Spain and Germany. Counselling and support services will be provided and every effort will be made to find suitable alternative employment for those affected.

"We are grateful for the efforts of these employees, and we will do all that we can to help them in their transition to other employment," Stone said."

For what its worth, I would imagine that Sealine needs a larger facility to build their larger models closer to the sea.
I know they are restricted for handling the larger models at Swanwick, + its difficult to get the larger ones (flybridge) under that road bridge. Times do change, so - come on Sealine - spill the beans..... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Sometimes it is SO frustrating /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif IME with Accountants "Cost" = anything that involves writing a cheque. Folk instead wasting 100 times as much in time is often not apparently a "cost" /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

or counterproductive penny pinching. Nothing wrong with being an Accountant, just that they often don't realise that running a business requires additional / different skills.
