Seal between deck and hull

In heavy weather I seem to get a water leak into the boat. I think I have tracked it down to the seal between the deck and the hull. The deck fits over the hull and is riveted in place with some sort of gunge as a sealant.

I was thinking I would try and remove as much of this sealant as I could then replace it with something.

The questions are:-

Is this the right way of going about it
and what sealant should I use?

If this is where the water is ingressing then it is definitely the best action to take. The caulking should be applied on the outside rather than from inside, for obvious reasons. Generally I would use Sikaflex 291 or 292 as both are suitable for hull-deck bonding, but 291 has a greater range of uses. I am assuming that your hull and deck are fairly conventional materials such as GRP, Wood, or Steel.

Sika will remain flexible-enough to allow for a little movement between the surfaces, but it is very touch stuff and will bond the two surfaces.
