Sea temperature reading 54℃

The sea temperature reading on my B+G Zeus display is reading around 54℃ at present. I believe it takes it's info from the sounder transducer. There does not seem to be anything to go wrong - no moving parts etc and there does not seem to be anyway to reset the temp reading. Until recently it displayed the correct temp range 18-24℃. Do any forumites have any thoughts on the matter? Thank you.

Are you sure that it is not reading in Fahrenheit?

Either the thermistor in the transducer molding has failed or you have a dirty connection, probably one of the two cables on the back of the display as the ones on the transducer are probably encapsulated. There is usually a way to calibrate the reading in the display but it does not sound like a slipped calibration is the problem. However, if you can find the setting in the display manual, it might be worth trying to reset it to a roughly correct setting to see what happens.

The temperature reading on my Raymarine ST 60 was always gibberish. As far as I can tell, it's only useful for detecting if you're in the gulf stream.

54 degrees is way outside the calibration range so it sounds like the sensor has failed - quite common. Raymarine offer a repair kit for their transducers - not sure what you have with B&G.

Raymarine now supply Airmar transducers, possibly B&G do too.

Yes, definitely Celsius.

Yes. Don't go for a swim without dipping a toe in the water first.

Bad connection or bad wire going to the sounder transducer. I have similar problem. Mine is also showing soup temperatures.....

These sensors are normally NTC, so the resistance decreases as the temperature rises. A poor connection would show low temperatures.

Do you have an NMEA2000 "smart" transducer? If so, is it still under warranty?

Not sure how "smart" is the transducer but the boat is only coming up 2 yrs old

Our transducer for our NSS is also overreading - its about 3 years old. I'm not concerned as the 20 year old Raymarine is still good. I'm not interested in a replacement unit, the current unit is well adhered in the hull and would cause immense anguish to remove.

We use ours (the Raymarine unit) as a navigation aid as the, warm, East Australian Current flows south at anything upto 4 knots and one needs to ensure you are in the EAC or out of the EAC (depending on your direction of travel).

I don't really have a use for the sea temperature, and the log transducer is out of the water, so I plan to experiment with a sensor somewhere on the engine.
