Sea Side Rescue

Guys,

The BBC did ask our permission to show the edited footage, but we didn't see the final cut until it was broadcasted on Wednesday. As for the other comments: I had rotated the crew on a three hourly basis and did consider other destinations, but there's not that many options when you're crossing Lyme Bay!

If any fault is to be apportioned it is with the Met Office who were still forecasting SE 15kts as the SW 44kt wind ripped off the radar reflector and destroyed my windex.

The net results of this event are some excellent footage of Dreamcatcher, a considerable degree of respect for our emergency services (thanks again Brixham lifeboat) and more experience for the entire crew. BTW: Simon did the 2007 Fastnet, which I think we all agree was a 'bit bumpy'!

Re your last remark about the met forecast. Oh bollux, the weathers done it to me....

Come on, in the UK you should expect f2-3 more than forecast. 44 knot gusts come off a f6. Get a better reflector and windex fitting :)

Seriously, glad that you are all safe, **** happens, nobody died and you've given us something to chat about.

[/grumpy old git who spent 2 days beating into a f6-7 after a forecast of a following f2-4 in North Sea]

Its best to be safe then sorry, as skipper you decided that you needed assistance, things could have gone disasterously wrong, putting the whole crew and yourself at risk, your risk assessment of calling for assistance, was down to you and no one else.

You made that decision and boat you and crew are now berthed up safely...

I subscribe to the lifeboats so they are able to go to the help of anyone requiring assistance at sea, and so should it stay that way....

no judgement of what if, why did they, etc etc...

Thanks for putting the record straight, it goes to show that there are always 2 sides to every story, my suspicions that they 'the media' never let the truth get in the way of good story appear to be true.

It's a shame they didn't stick to your story ... they could've shown you being tracked and lost and that could've been a valid reason to launch the LB.

During our own "rescue" - ended up towing a larger vessel into port - we radioed ahead so they were aware of our situation - and it was nice to know that there were pro's watching and prepared to react should the tow break or other issues.

It certainly makes you think about the programs and how they are sensationalised, perhaps it is time the programme makers came out into the real world and showed these things as they really are - it's still interesting, but not anywhere near as life threatening or dramatic ...
