From BBC news this morning.

A major air and sea search is going on off Portland in Dorset for a missing teenage boy.

Two 14-year-old boys stole a small rowing boat in the early hours of the morning and were swept out to sea.

The two friends were "laughing and joking" when they called for help because they could not get back to shore, a coastguard spokesman said.

The boat continued to drift and then capsized. One of the boys was rescued but the other is still missing.

'No sign'

Andy Jenkins, Portland Coastguard watch manager, said: "We are very concerned for the safety of the remaining young man.

"Weather conditions in the harbour area are challenging with squally showers, thunder and lightning.

"The oars to the small boat have been found, but no sign of the boat or the missing 14-year-old."

Both boys are thought to be from Portland.

I hope for the best, but fear the worst. What a tragedy.

Foolish yes, a tragedy if not found, or found dead, certainly. Sadly too often these days the real world comes up with a real whallop for some teenagers.

I don't think that a lot of them a have much of a grip on reality.

What do I know, just a crusty old fart! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

No video games in my day either, but it didn't stop me doing some very daft and risky things. Same as all of us I expect. Mine just didn't turn out to be life threatening. All we can do is hope.

My thoughts are with his parents at the moment, who must be going through hell.

True, nothing's worse than to have to face the loss of a child. I hope I never find myself in that situation.

But... what were two 14 year olds doing out "in the early hours"???

What a sheltered life you must have led! We did some pretty daft things when I was their age, but fortune seemed to take our side. There but for the grace of god...

We are talking of 14year old boy out in the early hours of the morning FFS . If you think thats ok then IMO god help any children you may have .

Hmmm! Whilst agreeing that it's a tragedy and that we've all done stupid things as kids ,I draw the line at theft. Its probably equally tragic for some poor bu88er who's found someone's knicked his dinghy, Thankfull it was not a car, they might have killed someone elses kids. I'd be interested in level of sympathy if this had been the case. probably get flamed now but can't help feeling Darwins law at work here. Mike.

Steady Lad, Steady /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I think everybodies heart is in the right place with this.......... How's that nice little boat of yours?

Charlie.

You wanna be flamed??...ok, Flame, Flame, Flame, Flame, Flame!!! so there take that! hope it singed ya pants, Daddy-Oh /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Whist I agree, I still think at 14, and being out on the loose in the early hours is not quite right, still a tragedy non the less. I have just come back from club rescue boat duty in Portland Harbour and the search was still going on but, by now I think we must fear the worst

Afraid I have to agree. Incident this summer where car full of teenagers doing about 90 in 30 zone in stolen car crashed killing some of them, T.V showed interviewed locals, quotes like lovely lad made about the driver. Are they for real? Stolen car, 90 in 30 zone and I seem to recall drunk as well. Just thank god no innocents involved. Sorry if offensive to some but you reap what you sow IMHO. Mike

I hope you don't take this the wrong way Mick, but if your new crew member does something similar in a few years time, would you still say "He was just getting his come-uppance" ??

There but for the Grace of God.......

Am I a really bad person for not having too much sympathy with teenagers that get into such difficulties after stealing things, whether they be cars boats or whatever. They are surely just getting their "comeuppance"?

Don't think I suggested you were.......did I?? Events of this nature are sure to provoke quite different responses in people, I think that here at the moment there is a feeling that whilst yes it is a tragedy it is also bloody stupid!

Some of us are a bit puzzled as to why two 14 year olds were out on their own at that time? Truth is of course we don't know, and I'll lay odds that right now there parents are thinking very hard about that.

My sympathies are with the parents of the missing one, but I have very mixed feelings about it in general. Judgements are very easy to make when you are standing on the touch line, are they not?

Well I aint Mick, but what would you say?

Not being a parent, and probably never likely to be now (for a variety of reasons) I couldn't say.

I do remember being 14 though.

No, but as a father of two teenagers I want to know where my kids are, and to the extent possible I'd like to know who they're with & what they're up to.

If any of my kids was not in their bed in the early hours I'd be looking for him/her all over the place.
Maybe I care too much.

Reply is quite simple. My son will be brought up the same way as I was, with enough respect for other peoples property not to steal it, My point is that if they hadn't stolen the dinghy they would not be in this predicament. So have to stand by my previous posts. Whilst tragic, at least this time, they took no innocent party with them or any member of the many organisations that are out there risking their own lives looking for them.. I was bloody Daft at that age (11 foot dinghy over 6' weir for example) but wouldn't dream of stealing anything. Having had my car broken into 4 times now (And they are someones little darlings too) I'd happily string em up and birch the bu**ers,
