Nick,
I don't believe that we live in a police state, yet, although that is well on the way - example woman driver eating an apple cost £10000 in prosecution.

Since 1997 serious violent crime has risen as have hospital admission waiting lists for cancer. Poorer council areas in the South which have not got New Labour MPs have suffered by having to subsidise Northern counties which have, under the grants system. Fairness, don't make me laugh.

The list of problems like this has expanded, together with blatant lies, so much under New Labour that it is endless.

Re: Odd one out

I would think that most Labour supporters on this forum keep their heads down - but they'll probably still be voting. I for one could have a nice chat about boats with someone who's political views I didn't share. Why spoil that by dragging politics into it, and making enemies.

Whilst I respect your views and your right to express them, I do wonder what sort of blinkered dream-world you are living it. 'Contempt for the democratic process'? This is one of the more serious charges Blair should be brought to book for. He and his ilk have consistently distorted the truth, treated the electorate like morons, undermined the role of Parliament and normally can't even be bothered to turn up for his audiences with the Queen.

Its a pity that the balance of views expressed in this thread isn't reflected nationally. Blair would be lucky to hang on to Sedgefield.

Re: Odd one out

You have a very selective memory. You seem happy to forget the endless sleeze and scandals following the avaricious, greedy and selfcentered Thatcher years which finally got the electorate so pissed of with the Tories they were nearly wiped out and from which they have never recovered. No doubt in your own mind someone else was responsible for all that.

As for the badly done to 'South', tough.

It's time to get real and accept that our first passed the post democracy will always lead to large proportions of the population disenfranchised and struggling to make any proper political statement. As it is we have to make choices between a limited number of parties none of whom can wholly represent our views.

We are condemmed to 'best of a bad lot' government.

Key to a parliamentary democracy is the existence of viable alternatives and a check on the excutive. We have neither. If the disaatisfied were to spoil there votes rather than vote positively and register that 50% of the electorate were not happy with the choices on offer .. would that not send a powerful signal?

Re: Odd one out

and of course, no one can see the similarities between Margaret Thatcher's comtempt for people, and Tony Blair's contempt for the electorate. At least MT had balls & teeth whereas all TB has is lies & deceit. How many electoral promises have they actually stuck to. Oh yes, kill off hunting. That's about it.

I have allways said that polling forms should have a box that says "I dont wish to vote for any of the candidates "The percentage registering no confidence should then be published.

I also think the low turn out is a national disgrace. When you see Iraquis risking bullets and bombs then our turnout plummets if its raining.

This is in fact horrible, but it is not solely a British thing. The whole of Europe (and more) has adopted this and it is of course all our American friend's fault. Any other government Britain could have had at the time would have adopted this as well, as has the rest of Europe (and the world) regardless of what color their government.

Why we have to blindly follow USA's sudden panic of terrorism I can't see. After all terrorism is nothing new, especially not in Europe. You have the IRA, Germany has had the RAF (no not your airforce this time), Spain has the ETA. So now there are arabs, but we wil certainly survive them also.

The answer to terrorism is more freedom, not less.

(sorry about the rant, half a bottle of red and a lot of winter left without sailing over here...)

other suggestions : not really

there were some interesting progs about thisrecently. Essentially, nobody in their right minds would become a uk politician these days, not least cos of interminable media intrusion, and also only a few have any power to do things, really. The tories are a bit frightened rabbitish and just prattle on, likewise the liberal lot as well.

i sortof wonder how long before most people ask why govt starts working like industry and praps its costs generally come down a bit each year as they get better at dong their jobs etc - rather than up each year (cos of pay etc rises) and then up again with tax %age going up too.

According to external commentators, Blair is riding a post-thatcher wave with no strikes etc for all it's worth. Germany and france know they are in dire need of the same, but getting nowhere. The eurozone should be doing all that "economic powering ahead" it promised in the late eighties but with big taxes it ain't worth ezome types working too hard, and it defintely isn't an idea to hire anyone in france with high employer's taxes hence lots of small french companies ...stay small.

hey ho. Five more years of world-shattering erm foxhunting bans etc looms.

I spopse longterm tho, geting rid of saddam was actually a good thing, and it needed x-party support - hence the tories knackered cos they can't attack the govt about it, and labour a bit knackered cos they daren't crow about it.

Eventually, i think some might realise that T Blair is a bit dim. Well, actually, no he's REALLY dim : nice public school, good looking, not a fat git, but for goodness sake ...what sort of numpty sells a house in london at the start of the housing boom... and then buys another right at the top of the housing boom? The person who hires/fires the chancellor of the exchequer, that's who, teehee...

Erm . . .
Are you accusing me of dragging politics into this thread???
- Nick

[/ QUOTE ]
Of course not, the thread was political from the start - created as an excuse for an anti-government session. (Actually my post looks like it was aimed at you, sorry). I suppose what I really meant was, is it worth arguing over? I doubt if anyone's mind will be changed, but ill feeling may linger on.

By the way, I posted the story on the Wayfarer list, their view is "great, more publicity for sailing, more for our boats".

Erm, actually it wasn't, it was merely an observation. Just like the post I put up about the Hunting debate where only 6 or 7 were in the house debating and 1000's were outside demonstrating. That too was only an observation, again I just happened to be watching Sky News at the time, but it ended up being the biggest post the forums have seen to date.

I personally don't give a rat's ass for this slimy Gov't, but the other lot don't have much else to offer either. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
