... seems to have bypassed the mods. What on earth was wrong with having a thread on spelling?

There are many on Scuttlebutt, some of whom may have contributed to the thread, who avoid the Lounge like the plague. OK, it's YBW's forum, but it just seems a bit heavy handed to shift an inoffensive thread like that.

They don't exactly garner respect, do they? I recall one of them, when queried 'what on earth was that for?' replying "I banned that because I can"....

I decided quite some time ago that attempts at rational communication was, with them, a waste of breath.

'Neither use nor ornament.....' :(

"Chat about cruising, debate this month's hot topic, hosted by Yachting Monthly magazine."

Chill out chaps. It doesn't really matter does it?
The mods seem to do a difficult job perfectly well as far as I'm concerned.

Off course its right that the topic should have been moved to the Lounge. That the place for "your non-boaty views, observations, ramblings, rants, jokes and banter" .

Pity they don't move other threads to the "correct" boards more often. eg practical issues to Reader to Reader" and non-practical issues to Scuttlebutt

Also crack down on double postings, sneeky ads for boats for sale in signatures etc

:)

We been here before, and I posted this.........

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scuttlebutt

However, I was called a scallywag or some such, possibly mischievous, but hey, at the end of the day, it's their forum, they pay for it, so there is naff all any of us can do about whatever decisions they decide to make. All you can do if you feel strongly enough is vote with your feet.

It seems that a lot of us a thoroughly pissed off with the E-bay links in the for sale section, but do I think they will listen? Don't hold yer breath.

Call me naive, but I think that IPC should perhaps take into account that we on these forums are the people that are most likely buying their magazines, That is something we can all do something about isn't it?

On the other hand.......

What started as a simple idea now has value that I am sure was not originally considered.

With the advent of social media and it's acceptance I am sure IPC would hate to loose this forum. They have access to a huge range of opinion and contact details for a qualified interest group of readers.

If Facebook is worth $100 billion despite the fact that the huge number of users on mobile devices are almost impossible to generate revenue from then perhaps this forum and others like it will end up being more valuable to IPC than the magazine revenue.

I stopped taking instructions from 'lance-corporal types' decades back in the last century. If I want your opinion, Mortadella, I'll give it to you!!

I remember visiting Chartwell, the home of Winston Churchill, a person I admire a lot; on a wall in his painting studio there's a copy of a memo; " Please do not finish letters from the P.M. ' yours gratefully '; only Mr. Churchill can decide if he's grateful or not ! "

The problem with moving the Spelling thread to the Lounge is that the Lounge has a different 'energy' to the rest of the forums - as a result of which the quality of the 'conversation' dived as soon as it was rudely moved there. I have now unsubscribed from it.

The thread wasn't just about spelling. It was originally - and actually remained - about the courtesy and tolerence with which we ought to treat one another on the main public forums, where the vast majority of sailing/boating/nautical discussions and contributions are made.

Move on people :(

SJ,

And Churchill.

As I only know bad things about him, and consider him to be OTT pompous, abusive, arrogant, etc! responsible for thousands of avoidable deaths who had an actor appointed to make some (all?) of his so-called famous radio announcements/speeches. Because he couldn’t be bothered/It was below him ….. as he was born in a palace into the ruling classes after all. ;)

Lets educate the masses as to the greatness of ‘the man’ …. and see what comes out of the woodwork? ;)

OG :D

As Acton said "Power tends to corrupt " & "Almost all great men are bad men" Whether you agree or not I think that the majority regard Churchill as a great man.
p.s. I don't know what this has to do with boating so perhaps it will be deleted.

As in most cases … only the very few ever know the truth. ;)

He favoured a 'United States of Europe' (as did Napoleon Bonaparte).

He was also a life-long Zionist (don't forget Britain's role re: Palestine) - indeed, the Israelis have often debated whether to have a public holiday to celebrate Churchill who they call 'the midwife of Israel'.

Will that do for starters ... ?

But I don't know what his views were on self-draining cockpits ....
(phew - almost forgot !)
