Scottish waters horribly crowded

We set sail from Kip last Friday, intending to spend a few days out and about taking the boat round to the west coast proper. Left Kip just after 9 Friday, headed west of Cumbrae, watched some amazing cloud formations over the Ayrshire coast (somebody in that part of the world had upset a weather god or two methinks...). Had to take considered course of action when passing the end of Cumbrae when we met our first boat of the day, felt positively claustrophobic. Thankfully as we reached Holy Isle the only two yachts in sight were suitably distant that we couldn't make out what model they were. One then had the bare-faced cheek to divert course and cross within half a mile of us as we reached Pladda. We bore east to re-establish a more comfortable distance of 2 miles, with the side benefit of picking up some cracking surfs and hitting a new personal best boat speed of 12.8kts. Grins all round.

Arriving Campbeltown we found out that the busy pontoon was backed up with 2 days of visitors who had stayed put rather than round the Mull or head home in pretty fresh winds. Thankfully got tied up next to empty locals boat so sense of isolation partly maintained.

Rounded Mull the following morning, thankfully sleeping in and missing tide times so nobody else around. Minor twitches when 60ft yacht spotted coming up Irish coastline, much relief when it diverted west and left us space to relax. Arrived in Gigha after messing around with spinnaker at 5pm to find bay completely empty. Slightly spoiled by the arrival of 2 more yachts later in evening, but we were on the beer by then and felt we could cope.

Last to leave the following morning, managed all the way to Corryvreckan without meeting another soul (well, apart from porpoises and seals who remained a respectable distance off). If we looked straight ahead though we could maintain the illusion of isolation most of the way into Croabh, which is so peaceful you might as well be on your own.

Is it just me, or is this alarming over-crowding in Scottish waters getting worse? Certainly a friend from London who joined us commented that it was just like the Solent on a bad day. Although he may have been talking about the foul tides.....

I blame the recent publicity in YM. We went out on easter monday for the first sail of the year, someone used the fuel berth about an hour before we left the marina, and broke the pristine silence, so I didn't feel so guilty firing up the engine. Once out into the Firth of Lorn we set of SW , when a glance astern caused a moments panic before it was confirmed that the yacht sailing in the Lynn of Lorn was heading away from us and we could finally relax. A potter down to loch spelve did reveal one mast in Puilladobhrain ( there may have been more but we couldn't be bothered getting the bins out). On the way home we had to check the Mull ferry was going to pass by at least a mile ahead.
Mind you the VHF was jumping, during one hour we had the ferry departure announcement, and then someone singing (quite tunefully) to his mate about the fishing . Somehow we managed to miss the radio checks, but we may just have been lucky.
I guess we can only expect cluttered sailing like this on bank holidays, still the sun was shining. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I was on that ferry on Easter Monday. Looked like a cracking breeze, judging by the Ketch we saw heading SW at about noon. Hope he didn't disturb you. In good easter weather the west highlands are unbeatable. Not even any midges!

Definately getting crowded- I could see three yachts leaving Tobermory a few minutes ago. Only one in sight from my window at the moment, though.

What a strange thing to say?.........You don't like peace and tranquility??

This post has really hacked me off.
I go to all the trouble of borrowing a boat in June, with a free Crew/Pilot on board, and now you tell me I will be jostling elbow to elbow in combat with a crowd of boats and vying for the last anchoring spots.
I suppose next you will be telling me there is a Sunsail fleet ready to ruin my Sundays too. oh no, I heard they packed that in, well thats a relief then.
Ah, but what about the Newtown Creek of the North, Cumbrae, eh? I suppose thats full too now. I'll bet they have even stopped the Indian takeaway deliveries to the bar.
I have seen the new pontoons at Rothesay, are they expecting a mass migration from the South? How will that impact on the Fish & Chip shop queue,hm?
Crikey, I have even heard they have new facilities at Tarbert.
I can therefore only conclude that the inrush of new facilities is caused by new EU money in prep for your independance.

I don't think you lot up there have thought this through. You need to restrict movements, and charge, well, well, ermm, a lot more. Make it exclusive. You know, out of the reach of the pesky locals. We might then put our third yachts there, after Solent and the Med, obviously.

Lucky for you that you haven't got the pest control thing licked, as the midges seem to be Gods way of having a laugh with you, because he gave you scenery. That should keep the place a bit more lonely for a while.

Don't know why I am bothering in June, it will be utterly poxy.

Bah, just doesn't seem worth it.

Re: Scottish waters horrible

It is of great concern to all of us down here that your waters are getting so crowded, I just cannot imagine how awful it must be in having to share the sea area with others, and passing within a mile of a ferry, Oh! big big scary! I don't think I'd like to be sailing up there! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Jim

Sorry this has got you worried, the good news is that there are no bank holidays in June , so things should be a lot calmer. If anchorages are looking full with one or 2 boats there is always another just around the corner.
One thing to remember though is to be aware of some of the larger yachts like the Ocean youth trust boats - they are big 60-80ft numbers and have caused me alarm on several occasions as you can have a Father Ted moment of "its a big yacht far away or a small yacht close up" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The midges rarely are a problem , in sunshine or a breeze above 5 knots they keep down in the turf when you are ashore. I have never been bothered at anchor or when moored more than 20m of the shore.

Is 'nt it wonderful for you that the empty waters compensate so adequately for the rain, midges, cold, inhospitable hostelries, uncouth natives, uncouther white settlers and short season ;-)

Sorry to disillusion you, but we have nothing here to adequately compensate for all the horrors you describe.
If I were you, I would stay where you are for the joys of visiting your Channel beauty-spots, with their huge advantage of being able to reach the shore just by striding from boat to boat all the way.

Who mentioned "peace and tranquility" ?

I think they were implying that they weren't getting any because it was all way too crowded. Anyway, I'm with them, for instance, I couldn't be doing with the likes of lake Solent not with all that waving and cooying they all want to do!

Balls to that, a nice bit of peaceful solitude in uncrowded waters......you can't beat that!

If those crowded Scottish waters are going to put you off in June then try the lovely Bristol Channel /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif You can sail all day off Gower and North Devon and Pembrokeshire and see nothing but the odd fishing boat or ferry at that time of year. Anchorages are usually guaranteed to be empty - and none of that visitor mooring malarkey!

And virtually NO charter boats or sea schools, and definitely no flotillas /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just don't go into Padstow/Appledore/Swansea/Milford Haven and you will have plenty of solitude

(But please don't tell the south coasters about how beautiful and empty and cheap our home waters are /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif)
