Schengen 90/180 post Brexit (again... I know!)

(my bold above)
Sadly it would seem that the French offerings mentioned in the link are just the existing visa options, with no modifications or simplifications. The article is simply targeting Brits due to Brexit and 1/1/21 being very close now, not I think because there have been any actual changes to visa requirements.

Furthermore, it perhaps shows that countries might not be as willing to amend their existing visa rules so as to not lose British trade as some here might have hoped...

I think you are wrong to see this as a negative. Not all countries are offered these longer term visas and I was not sure if UK passport holders would be offered them. The French government website did not include UK passport as an option until very recently. I don't think we could expect more than this as third country nationals.

I'm not seeing this as negative - realistically, it is exactly as I had expected (sob...!!!!!). Others I think anticipated more, but I fear that any bespoke agreements are likely to be years off*. As third country nationals, I fully expected the current system to be amended to include us. As you acknowledge, it was just a matter of the website being updated to include 'British' as an option!

Edited to add: Thanks to these matters not being part of the current trade agreement talks.

Please correct me but I understood part of the Withdrawal Agreement was that short term British visitors (up to 90 days) to the Schengen Zone wouldn’t require visa❓

We're talking at cross purposes. You can stay in France or any other Schengen country for 90 days without a visa.
But some countries also offer a long-stay visa that gets you more than the first 90 days. France is one. It would be nice if Spain and/or Portugal did as well, but I don't think they do.

Thanks for the clarification so any chance you could advise those countries, in addition to France, that offer an extended visa and how long will this extended visa last?

Surely we just have to do what the rest of the world does; enter Europe, tear up our documents and say, "I'm here. What are you going to do about it?" Simple.

Or, if it's France you want to live in, just stay there and say that you're waiting for the right opportunity to cross the Channel to England and the Authorities will leave you alone.

Vic and I have debated many issues here.

Having been in here for just over a month, with 124 posts, possibly, your are not so aware of Vic’s aspirations but I’m fairly certain he is not in a Channel port waiting to return to England.

But Vic can speak for himself.

Far from it , the last place I want to Be in is a channel port , well not the English channel anyway .

Flexibility on France 90-day visa after Brexit is 'possible'

"France may be willing to look again at the 90-day rule for Britons in the future, the country’s Europe Minister has suggested.

Clément Beaune said it is possible France could take national measures to extend the visa-free time limit to allow UK visitors, including second-home owners, to extend stays beyond 90 days in any 180-day period, as per Schengen area rules."

Sense may yet prevail ?

Behind Paywall - Not on here❓An interesting read.

Sense may yet prevail. ✅

I have long held the view that this is the way things could possibly go.

In which case many people who have got residency may elect to hand back their residency. Especially if some form of reciprocal healthcare is agreed.

There are continuing whispers that some countries are in discussions with the UK through diplomatic channels on viable ways to allow longer-term travel to the benefit of all parties.

I do not think that, for one moment individual countries will contravene EU/Schengen Regulations but residency, visas and visitors length of stay in a country are very much national, not EU issues.

The real problem will be policing the (non) internal Schengen borders to ensure that long stay visitors to one country do not migrate to another country for longer than 90/180 days - possibly don't bother beyond making examples of those flaunting the rules.

On another tack, I have heard that the EU is considering changing Schengen from 90/180 to 180/360 (6 months in a calander year) for all third nation visitors.

It is seen that, whilst retaining control, this added flexibility could bring significantly more income in to the EU. Of course, none of this can be admitted to until the current Brexit political pissing contest is concluded.

It's all going to be rather interesting.

You can already get a long stay tourist visa for France so this doesn't really change anything.
