SC29 - Fuel consumption?

Hi,

I am thinking of buying a Sealine SC29 with the twin D3 engines. I am being told that fuel consumption is around 20 litres per hour at 22kn cruise. This sounds rather too good to be true for a 7.4 metric ton boat churning out 320 HP. My quick calculation is telling me to think about 60 to 80 litres/hr with the engine running at 2/3rds throttle. Is there an SC29 owner that can advise please.

Fantastic. Thanks for that. My current boat weighs in at 3000Kg has 220 HP engine and uses 45 litres of petrol per hour at cruise. It is also a deep V planing hull. The SC29 weighs in at 7400 Kg and has 320 Hp (across 2 engines). I was extrapolating based on weight and engine power. I guess diesel produces more power per litre burnt because diesel has a higher calorific value than petrol which will account for better comparative fuel efficiency. 40 litres per hour it is. That isn't bad at all.
 
I used to have s S29. I got about 2.5mpg at 25 knts, so yes around 40 ltrs per hour. That was with 160s. Great boat and easy to handle.
 
20 litres per hour per engine is probably about right.

20 litres per hour total is way too low, your estimate of 60-80 is bonkers high, maybe at wot but not a mid 20s cruise.

Hi I’m new here. Looking at the sc29 as a first boat but the mileage range on a full tank is diabolical if I’ve worked it out right. Reading comments on here there saying around 40 litres per hour at around 2.2 nautical miles per gallon. There’s 478 litre capacity in the sc29 divide that into gallons that’s 91 gallons at 2.2miles per one that’s a little over 200 nautical miles to a tank which at uk price red 60/40 around £1.20 a litre that’s £573 to fill her up. But only get 200 miles range? So port of hull to port of Bordeaux is a little over a 1,000 miles so is that going to cost nearly £3,000 in fuel just to get there?!?? Please tell me my maths is utterly wrong ?

:) you brits are so confusing with your imperical units :)
I have a fairly similar boat with 2 x D3-190

as others have pointed out, I think that 2.5nm/g is about right for this boat / engines
that is 1.8liter per mile, (1gal= 4.5l ??)
that would be 1800l for your trip of 1000nm
at 1.2£/l that would be £2160 for the trip, (one way)
if you take your more pessimistic number, 2.2nm/g, that is 2l/nm, so 2000l for your trip, so £2400

in my experince, D3's are economic engines re fuel consumtion
they need special care in maintenance !
 
your right thanks guys. So £2,400. So 5grand. It’s a lot isn’t it. Maybe stick to Cornwall ? thanks guys ✌?

My biggest cost is mooring on the Solent, fuel comes a distant second really...

Maybe a sailing boat would be more appropriate, although rigging replacement can add up to a lot too!
 
Generally speaking cost of fuel is relatively small in the grand scheme of things. We have had 2 sc29s in our boating life, one with the 160s and one with the 190s.

I think we would use around 30 lph per engine at around 26 kts. Think if we pushed it upto 32 kts we were around 45 lph each.

I thought it had around 600l in terms of tanks, I thought 300 per side but may be wrong on this?
 
Would Hull to Bordeaux not be a fairly ambitious trip to undertake in a Sealine SC29. The Brittany coast can be challenging with huge tides and big seas. You might spend more money on marina fees waiting for suitable weather windows than on diesel.
 
Hi. A friend has one of these. It’s an incredible thing for efficiency. I’m sure we worked out it was around 30 litres per hour at slow planing to cruise speed, from memory. That’s total. Can’t remember exactly but I think that was around late 2000’s rpm maybe. The thing I was blown away with was their top end pace. Such a quick efficient hull. Stepped hull meant it’s so efficient planing and top end. I think I clocked him at about 40 mph gps or just over. Amazing. Just watch those timing belts are getting changed as they should though. One of my or my favourite boats at the 30ft size.
