SC29 - Fuel consumption?

Just asked an owner. His are 190 d3s. He thinks he’s about 27/28 mph at 3000 rpm and about 40 litres per hour at that by the looks. Isn’t completely sure. But he has that in mind

Looking at the sc29 as a first boat
......... port of hull to port of Bordeaux is a little over a 1,000 miles ..............
This is not a journey most people make in their own motorboat ...... let alone when they are new to boats .
Departing Hull , going for a spin and getting back in without incident would be a good start .

True, doubt you would do Bordeaux in a day, certainy not there and back to catch the last penn in the lock at Hull........... :)

yeah maybe being a little ambitious there I guess. I just fancied going to Bordeaux in a boat. Surely you can cross the channel in this boat..and the bay of biscay ? It’s a 30ft motorboat surely that a be suitable no? I am new to it. So apologies if this sounds naive.

As MartynG says cross channel is doable in this size boat with experiance and the right weather conditions but I think its too small for Biscay.

I didn’t expect it to be fine in a day. Definitely 2/3 slow cruising I wanted. Question..could I do that trip by myself? When it comes to night getting some sleep do I put the autopilot on or just what switch off lol I’m sure this sounds absurd but I’m new to this. I just wanted to travel with me and my dog ?

You couldn’t stick near the coast and just sail close to it down to Bordeaux then? I thought a 30ft boat would be enough but maybe not. You see ppl crossing the Atlantic in 30ft sail boats. I thought a 30ft motorboat would be more better on the ocean waves. With the added motors to plough you through them waves ? or Am I being naive again lol

Not many people who have been boating for years would make the trip you are thinking of on their own or even in company

Do you know what your dog is like on a Boat. Some love them Some hate them

I don’t no what she’d be like to be honest. I just hoped she’d be alright and enjoy it but I guess I need to find this out for sure. Maybe this is just not a doable plan. People on here say most people wouldn’t do this trip even with experience. Jesus I actually thought it was a small trip ?

Hull to Spurn point is a small trip but believe me even that can be nasty.

going to have to rethink all this. Great to get an insight though. Thank you for indulging my questions. I like motorboats but dam should I get a sailboat now ??

I think the Humber is a good training ground . The shallow puddle known as the North Sea a challenge.

Our friends take their dogs on the boat while on the river but not if we are going to go fast . However some dogs seem okay with boats at speed .
As far as journey length is concerned I would say 4 to 5 hours is plenty for a boat journey although I have done 12 hour days , with a long break waiting for tide.

With all due respect, it sounds like you're getting a bit ahead of yourself thinking of a trip to Bordeaux with a dog before you've even bought the boat and wondering if a yacht would be a better idea. Fortunately, you've got time over the winter to do some research. Would it be possible to join a club and talk to members about the differences between boat types and what's possible? Failing that, talk to some brokers. They want to sell you a boat, but hopefully, not the wrong one.

In general, if you think you might like the journey and enjoy using wind and tide to best advantage, look at a sailing boat. If that's of less interest and you just want to get somewhere and enjoy the destination, go for a motor boat. I think, having done both, if you're not sure, go for motor.

Having decided on what sort of boat you want, spend the next season learning to use it (and break in the dog) locally. You'll find plenty of challenges and learning opportunities without even crossing the channel. If all goes well, you could think about a trip to Bordeaux in 2023.
