Saundersfoot New Pontoons...

There were none there last week. They have moved all the boats on the hard to the car parking area by the tourist office and cleared the area to the south of the harbour.

There is a harbour plan but it does not included gates to keep the water in.

Apparently the moorings will be afloat at all states of tide-

Outer Harbour Visitor Pontoons
Saundersfoot Harbours aims to establish a pontoon mooring facility that is afloat at
all states of tides that offers a substantial facility for visiting boats to moor alongside.
Developing new commercial opportunities for operations as water taxi services
between the harbour and pontoons as well as between harbours.
A significant draw for transiting and local vessels.

Thanks for that... although I still don't understand how the pontoon will be afloat at all states of the tide unless a gate is installed or the pontoons are located in the sea outside of the harbour the same as the Dale offshore pontoon... the graphic on google shows the pontoon and walkway by the west quay!

This: http://www.sell2wales.gov.uk/search/show/search_view.aspx?ID=FEB073771

says that the pontoons are to be installed in 'Saundersfoot Bay'.... and that there will be a total of 60m of pontoons. What this will all actually consist of isn't terribly clear to me either. They are going to have to be outside the harbour walls if they are going to stay afloat that's for sure. Perhaps they are intended to go in the lower left of this view, off the beach between the outer breakwater and the headland to the south?

The outer breakwater might be the grey walls shown in this image, with the yellow 'stuff' being the rock cliffs behind?

If they are outside the harbour they will be unuseable much of the time and a death trap for the unwary should wind freshen or change direction during the night.

This settles the question for sure...

Dear Mr Tony Davies.

The outer Harbour pontoon will be located 900m off shore from the harbour wall. (Within the harbour management area)

This is the nearest that we can locate them to have water underneath them at our very lowest springs.

The distance will be similar to that of the Dale pontoon.

They will be deployed in time for the summer school holidays.

Further details will be posted on our web site in May.

Regards

Michael

Well done Tony that's the answer we needed :)

900m off the harbour wall? It's better than nothing but I hope they don't have their hopes up too much for the improvement in yacht visits. It sounds less appealing (for overnights) than anchoring, which you could always have done....

I visited Saundersfoot yesterday... work is progressing on a new slipway where the boatyard used to be, it will outside of the harbour in the south west corner and there will be a "drystack" system in operation in this area... massive brackets have been attached to the harbour wall where by the fisherman's quay ready for pontoons... work is progressing on phase one on the decking over the flushing pond at the top of the harbour... I was told by one of the workers that the "Cathleen and May" was to be sited there but I have doubts about this... there are to be three separate pontoons offshore and they are due at the end of June...

The inner harbour pontoon is in place. Very nice job. The dry stack racks have been built. The decking over the sluice is in progress as is the slip.

The outer pontoons will be out be the red buoy approx 900 metres out.

I took a photo of the displayed plan but suspect it won't come properly without photo bucket so it can wait until I'm home

I was there last week... The inner harbour pontoon is in place... Work continues on the new slip, which exits through the S.W. Corner of the inner harbour, where the boatyard used to be, right up against the cliff and will be usable at all states of the tide, so I was told, although I'm personally skeptical as it's a goodly distance on low water springs... The dry stack system is in place... There were twelve concrete filled tractor tyres with chain attached on the inner harbour slip awaiting deployment I presume for the off-shore pontoons... Work continues on the decking over the sluicing pond... So there...
