Satellite telephone and Med Islands Cruise

We have just completed our summer cruise to Sardinia, Sicily, Malta and Tunisia then back to Gibraltar via the Balearics. http://www.michaelbriant.com/cruise_1995.htm

For next year we are thinking of Madeira and the Azores but fancy having a satellite telephone on board. I am finding the internet research difficult to understand.

I would like be able to get on the net to receive weather information from say - weatheronline - be able to send and receive emails and make/receive the occasional telephone call.

Does anybody have experience of sat phones or can suggest which system I should go for?

I used a Delorme Inreach device on my way from the Uk to the Algarve. Email only but does the biz. Myself and Geem of this parish have one each. We weather routed each other, him across the Atlantic, me across Biscay. It also has a panic button similar to an epirb. Excellent bit of kit.
