Satellite phones

I am planning a cruise from The Algarve in Portugal out to the Azores in mid June. I am considering renting a satellite phone to keep in touch with home and family and also as a safety aid. Is Iridium the most appropriate and will I be able to get any weather info using it? Also does anyone know which companies offer the best deals for rental for a month or so?
