Depends what you want to do.... What phone?????

As was said in another thread you can use Iridium with Sailmail. Sailmail gives you more bytes for your dollar by
virtue of its file compression.

The phone is an Iridum 9555, I wanted to send and receive emails for weather etc, I will look into Sailmail, any other suggestions welcome,
Thank you

As far as I remember there should be a disk with the phone to set this up. Didn't try it, but was told that It can be set up with a basic email such as Outlook Express, and presume the disk with it sets it all up.

Mike, do a search here or search the Sailmail site as Sailmail has short cuts for making requests for Grib files and maybe more. so maybe Sailmail could do all you want. The advantage of Sailmail my be its file compression as the Iridium is a wee bit slow dealing with bits and bytes.

You may only need to make a lead to connect the phone to our sound card for this to work.

Have a look..

Basically works like a very slow modem, netlimiter 3 is a great piece of software to have installed as well, for anyone connected to the net..

Looks like they do a data to usb cable now as well..

Many thanks to all of you for your replies, very helpful links to follow up, like the look of mailasail, inexpensive to.

I'm intrigued by an OP question that asks about a connection between a laptop and the phone who then gets recommendations for Sailmail compression services.

Surely if recommending a product then you need to know what usage is planned.

If for example the OP wishes to download a 50kb weather girb every day for a couple of weeks then the subscription for Sailmail will far exceed the actual call costs for a simple connect, download Wx, upload emails and disconnect (on a SIM with a 30 day pre-paid satellite contract).

Would need to know more about your planned usage before subscriptions for compression services are recommended!

As to connection to the laptop - purely depends on the phone model. Some handsets require extra cables.. some such as the RST100 just need a simple serial cable from your laptop (perhaps using a USB-Serial convertor)...
