Sardinia Summer 2015

?ugger - wrong parts arrived - my fault - Sleipner asked me if it was a 4 brush set and I said yes - in fact each brush is split into two making is an 8 brush set.
Not sure it's really your fault, M.
Having seen the things, I can't understand how anyone in his right mind could expect you to guess that a motor with 4 of those split brushes qualifies as an "8 brush set".
Otoh... Hang on.... Aren't these the same folks who were trying to convince us that curved fins stabs are more efficient?!? :D :p
Now, where's my coat, before jfm reads this...? My swmbo reaction to Deleted User inference about IT women would be nothing compared to his!

Jokes aside, fair winds for tomorrow passage, and all the very best for the rest of your summer.
It has been great to have you, your family and friends here in CF - I hope you enjoyed your stay as much as we enjoyed the great company!

Very slow internet at the moment.
SWMBO and I arrived in Mahon on the fuel berth in the early hours.
Pootled all the way except for 2.5 miles for us to check that we really did have 2400hp!
Uncomfortable beam sea for the first couple of hours but the passage improved all the time until we had a very small followind sea/wind for the lasr 4 hours into Mahon.
The local family of Carloforte dolphins came out briefly to see us off as well.
I havd a pic of them taken using AnCam - see it should have been called "DollyCam" after all.
Will post the pic when we get a better internet signal.

We tried to stay in Mahon but it is so full that we left as soon as we had refuled - just over 1400 litres - not at all bad.
We are now at anchor in Cala Teulera, the anchorage on the right as you enter Mahon.
Booked in to Ways restaurant tonight!!

We seem to have come back to the Baldricks with a BUMP - everywhere is full up with "people".
I guess this is what it is going to be like over te next 2 or 3 weeks before we head for home in Sant Carles.
We have already contacted the Sant Carles yachties and should be meeting them again later today.

@MapisM
Thanks again for being instrumental in making my/our summer a great one to remember.
You have, simply, the best swimming anchorages we have ever visited.
We WILL be back.

M and M

Mike, just want to say a massive thank you for starting this thread and to all those who have contributed thus far!

This thread shows all that is good about this forum. meeting people, shared interest, technical know how and innovation, fun, beautiful locations.

We were talking about you and this thread last week whilst sat in Chichester marina, fantastic advert for med boating (if one was needed)!

Thanks for those kind words.
And I've really enjoyed starting and adding my posts to the thread.

And it isn't over for us yet.
3 weeks more in the Baldricks before we set off back to Sant Carles.
(BTW it seems that is this thread is responsible for the name Baldricks).

Our eldest son (the one who competed in the Iron Man event - see earlier in this thread - it seems an age since we supported him in Alcudia in May) hasn't done a long passage with us before so he is flying out to Palma at the end of the month to join us for the final leg of this fab summer cruise.

And, as we all know, the Med weather generally continues into early November.
So we will be back af Sant Carles in October - maybe a late season cruise - who knows?

Left Mahon yesterday after another fantastic meal in Ways.
We stayed the night in Cala Teulera.
Yesterday was a short trip into Cala Binibeca.
Spent the night with yachtie friends from Sant Carles.
It was great to meet up again and share each other's stories.
Currently there are 4 Sant Carles boats here anchored in the lee of 15 to 20 knot winds.
We have passed by Binibeca several times and though it was far too small to get in.
In fact there is quite a lot of space but during the day we get a lot of "hooray henries" so a lot of man made swell rocks us a bit.
Weather forecast is strange at the moment - current thought is to go north - maybe Alcudia and perhaps Sollier round to Palma bay by middle of next week.
Internet is still too slow for any pics, I'm afraid - maybe I will post them retrospectively.

Just looked at AIS and it has Match recorded on the south of Mallorca yesterday evening.
I think he might have been in Cala d'Or last night - maybe heading north - maybe even Alcudia at the same time as us - we will keep an eye out for him.
The marinas are generally full at this time of the year so we are thinking of anchoring outside Alcudia if we go that way.
If we do go, we will definitly book the Meson Dulcinea - steak restaurant.

Just to add my thanks to you for sharing your great cruising adventure we arrived home from alcudia on friday the marina isn't to busy I don't think you will have a problem with a berth should you desire also there is a new restaurant that is well worth a visit it's just along from the bodega des port ( out of marina to bridge over turn right all the way along wooden walkway then keep following road as if going to ferry terminal ) on the same side and it's called the posidonia ( best to book 0034971 545297) it's a lovely position overlooking the water and the food is sublime. portions not as big as dulcinea or the price but the position and the staff make it a must do ...... I look forward to a review

Well, in the meantime I can throw in some, just to follow up the great job you did so far! :D
In fact, after you left, we had some days of really glorious weather, which obviously meant a bit of cruising, anchoring and snorkeling.
Hard job as usually, but someone's got to do it!
...Also because this afternoon some mistral eventually built up, and is predicted for stay for a few days - unfortunately for Deleted User, who as I understand should arrive tomorrow.

Anyway, I must say that having plenty of time to spend onboard, cherry picking the best moments for going at sea, is the greatest privilege I've ever experienced in pleasure boating.
I'm not saying that better/bigger boats are pointless of course, but that just doesn't compare with the luxury of having time to spend as you prefer!
A good example is the debate we had in this very same thread about heavy ground tackle and "extreme anchoring", because in the last couple of days the sea conditions allowed me a bit of anchoring the other way round, so to speak. I'm talking of anchoring with a chain scope of.... zero!
The following short clip shows what I mean.
With no current and wind to talk of, dropping the anchor vertically to the seabed has been enough to stay for the day, without moving one inch...!
...though I must admit that in another bay where we overnighted, I did let down some chain.

A few other pics of the place below, including a couple of some folks nearby, while they were trying their toys... :)

Thanks for that info.
We are still in Binibeca with a question to head for Alcudia today.
It seems that there will be some swell in the bay and we were planning on anchoring off.
So if that plan fails, it is good to hear that the marina isn't that busy.

BTW
We heard that tge authorities have thrown out everyone anchoring in Cala Teulera (Mahon)
Absolutely disgraceful IMO
It has been one of the few safe havens in the las 2 days.
With no space available in Mahon itself, I wonder what they think they are playing at.
Info only second hand though so the rumour might not be true.

Update from us
Had a swelly night in Cala Galdana with yachtie friends from SC
Currently, we are all mid way between Menorca and Mallorca.
Enroute to Alcudia for tonight and guess what - the Meson Dulcinea - already booked for tonight.
Got som shopping to do so will probablt get a taxi to Mercadona - need some of that Spanish cava!!
Not sure yet but we will probably be at anchor outside Alcuduamar tonight.

No pics, I'm afraid - only have limited 3G

Spanish Cava dependency - Such a terrible affliction to suffer from :)

Thoroughly enjoying this thread, so much so I've gone back to the beginning and starting reading it all again. It's a bit like summer - you don't want it to end

Have a look at this page then
It is a temporary page tha I have set up to find friends on AIS
www.scmchat.com/mike/myfleet.html
It uses Vesselfinder which seems to find boats that Marinetraffic cant.
Viking and Cocobaroo are two of the SC boats we are travelling with.
AIS is really working well this year - our friends are using AIS smart phone aps to transmit their positions
On the above page you will see Match on the south of Mallorca
That is his last known position - I think he is in Cala d'Or

Nearly at Alcudia now so I need to concentrate again now.

More reports later.

This is all spy in the sky stuff and I'm not sure I want it! The whole point of boating as far as I'm concerned is to get away somewhere where your relatives can't find you;)

Did I see MYAG in Barca? That wasn't part of his plans was it? I know how much he likes marinas :).
I don't think the Baldrickian weather has been very kind to him by all accounts

Yep, there was a big forum raft in the cala next to Cala d'Or over the last 2 days. I think there's a photo on the boats.co.uk twitter page, although it got bigger after that photo was taken. Great fun, but we've now left Match and moved on towards Palma, then heading to Ibiza.
