Sardinia Summer 2015

Fabulous stuff Mike (and M). I really enjoyed reading that. Well done with the weather picking!

Great sexy upgrade on the voice - think I'd set it for 5 minute intervals not 30!

And 8th season for JW - seems only like the other day I was reading your build and delivery threads - sheesh, how time flies!

Although I say it myself, we picked the weather perfectly - with a little help from Mr Windguru and Passageweather.
It is blowing old boots today and heavy rain forecast for tomorrow.
Wind forecast to drop Monday but not completely go so just as well we are here - earlier that we expected.
Just checked Deleted User's boat and she is fine.

30min on the voice logger is plenty frequent enough.
Believe me, after a long passage she starts to become a bit irritating.
Also, we tend to forget her after we arrive and she often "spouts fourth" just as we are docking - can be a bit confusing for the dock masters!!

I couldn't agree more :):encouragement::cool:

Excellent pics, thanks for the photo blog. Really inspiring, too.... "must work harder" .... I want to be the person taking those pictures some day :)

Excellent pics and update, thanks for posting. Looking forward to popping in to CF in a few weeks time and hope to see you there.

Great post Mike. You can tell djefabs is envious of the flat water! Have you suggested to him he relocate OT to the Med?:D

LOL, it's nice to see that there are some connoisseurs who know everything about CF even if they live some 10k miles far away...! :D

It's easy when they bring back such pleasant memories, like the lighthouse picture on approach to the island.
Both boats must not be too far from E's yacht that we checked on. I'm looking forward to plenty more pics and stories of CF and the island over the summer.

Funny you should mention that C, because I spoke with E recently, and he's in CF at the moment, but busy with the last bits and pieces of his newly built (and beautiful!) sea front house.
I didn't ask him about his Hanse yacht, but you re right, that's just about the position where she's usually moored.
She might be still on the hard, dunno for sure. But I'll know better shortly! :)

Just uploaded a few more pics

Digressing a bit - during our stay in Menorca, we hired a car and popped over to Ciutadella.
Only popped in by boat before but didn't venture completely inside so we thought it would be nice to see the place from the shore.
Here are a few pics - we stayed for lunch - had a Menorcan equivalent of Paella - more like soup but otherwise similar to Paella.

Ciutadella is a beautiful harbour - restaurants all round and the old town above.

On the way back we popped in to a favourite anchorage of ours - Addaia
Here are a few pics - this is a very safe anchorage - unlike Fornells (close by) which is a bit exposed.
Addaia has a small marina but I know several friends that anchor outside - indeed we did a couple of years ago.
The navigation through the approaches requires care but the deep channel is well marked.
Once inside, the bottom is mud and there is plenty of protection from any swell and wind.
Here are some pics

This is the anchorage - a good selection of restaurants within walking distance as well.
Anyone not wanting to use Mahon could wait for a weather window here before a passage to the east.

Anyway - winding forward again to Carloforte.

Since we arrived, it has been windy here - 20 knots or more.
So we haven't been out of the marina.
There may be a small opportunity but it looks like the boat will stay put for the next week as well.

So, we got the bikes out and decided to explore the island.
Maybe MapisM will correct me if I'm wrong in any of the following.
Carloforte is the only town on the small island of San Pietro - (Saint Peter's Island - I believe)
The island is 5.5 nautical miles long by 3.5 nautical miles wide.
There seem to be plenty of good roads so getting round by bike has been easy - especially as we have electric bikes!!

Yesterday, we decided to check out the north - mistral still blowing.
You wouldn't have thought that this was the same bit of water that we took those pics when approaching the island last week.

Today, the wind was still blowing from the north so we packed a picnic lunch and our swimming things and rode off to the south of the island.
Out of the wind, it was completely different.
MapisM sent us some waypoints of anchorages around the island so we thought we might check them out using the bikes and, maybe, have a swim as well.

It is still very early so I expect that these beaches will be popular later in the season.
But here are a few pics of the south of the island.

Well, we did manage to have our first swim of the season from this beach.
It was a bit cold to say the least - SWMBO was first in (as usual) so, to keep my dignity, I had to follow.
Our experience from cruising round Mallorca at this time of the year is that it takes until about mid June before the water temperature becomes bearable enough to enjoy. Lets hope that it is the same here.
Late season, is always better - I believe that Pinacle is coming out here in September - that should be the best time.
Still, we should get some good water temp in a few weeks.

It seems that the locals know where they can cut the corners!!

SWMBO stopped and took this pic of the flamingos.
Just south of Carloforte (on the outskirts of the town) there is a salt lagoon - which is home to the flamingos.

So, finally, it was back to the boat for some G&Ts - ohh yes - we did stop in the town for some Italian ice cream on the way back.

I've got my video editing tools with me so, in the evenings (if we are not out eating!!), I'm in the process of editing video clips that I took during our crossing into a video.
I will see if it will upload onto Youtube and post it later if anyone is interested.

Great minds etc. - that's the preferred transport system on the island also for myself and the boss! :)
Looking forward to making some trips together.
One of the nicest is the road that goes to the lighthouse, on the W coast.
But in a few places it's pretty steep, and requires some effort also with electric bikes, at least with ours, which are not very powerful.

LOL, I see that you already enjoyed the Mistral landscape from the NE tip of the island, aka "La Punta" (The Point).
While you were there, you might have spotted the one and only house built right on the rocks, in front of the coast.
The owner is a good friend of ours - btw her lovely golden retriever appeared in one of my old videos.
Well, this is the sort of sea she enjoys during some winter storms, just in case you thought that the sea in your pic was rough...! :D

Anyway, yes, with Mistral you can still enjoy the SE anchorages, as your pics show.
And the nice thing is that the whole E coast is well sheltered from Mistral, so you can reach them cruising just a few miles south from the harbour, in a reasonably calm sea.

All confirmed, it's pretty much the same in CF, in my experience.

It seems that the locals know where they can cut the corners!!
Indeed, but I wouldn't try to follow them with a boat like JW, in that specific point! I go round the external rocks also with mine, fwiw.

Nice pics mike, thanks. I love Cuitadella for a one night stop now and again. There are three 25m berths where the tallest mast is in centre of your first pic, bookable thru the yacht club. Picture in the middle of these three berths is below- to my port side in this (2011) pic, out of camera shot obviously, is the Princess 67 "Pride of Stavanger" that later burnt in Antibes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsLYfvN8I0c, and was later bought by Nick Barke and broght to Essex, and sold minus engines to someone with a lot of diy skills I hope, and BartW almost bought her Man 1150 engines a few months ago.

CF looks like a great beach/cruising location too

I've never been into Addaia. Would I get Match in there?

Yes, very nice Hurricane, the Flamingos on the lake are impressive. We overnighted with MM in one of those SE bays, beaut location looking back to shore.
The electric bikes work well on the island, nice way to get around. Keep the pics and stories coming! :)
