Sardinia Summer 2015

MapisM recommended the anchorages either side of Teulada (right at the southern tip of Sardinia (Porto Zafferano and Cala Piombo)
He reckons that you can anchor in the lee whichever side the wind is blowing.
Maybe this will be good for you and you can report back - we will probably head that way ourselves sometime during the summer.

As MapisM said in his reply, the area around Cabo Tuelada is a military firing range however there seems to be a moratorium on firing in July and August. Since we're just short of July having someone lobbing (alleged) depleted uranium at you would be a bad idea! Also going ashore there carries risks of the 'Danger UXB' kind so be warned. When we passed yesterday morning there was no-one anchored either side, we went close under the cape and across the bay to the west without interference. Its beautiful in a desolate sort of way, just scrub and hills ashore with beautiful views all around and clear, clear water.

Now in Sifredi btw

Just got back from a swim in one of the bays on the south of the island - only by bike though.
Switched on AIS and it seems that MYAG has just arrived on Sant Pietro.

Here's as AIS screen dump of him approaching Guidi.

It was gorgeous out there half an hour ago.
I should think they may stay there overnight.

LOL, MYAG surely has no reason to feel abandoned... :D
Btw, in Guidi he should have also mobile coverage, so just in case he's reading this:
For snorkeling, the bay as such is nothing special - clear water, yes, but boring sandy seabed.
Otoh, all around the small cape marked as "Pta. du Xitta" in the above map, it gets nicer and rocky, with good chances to spot some decent fishes.
Mind the current, though - particularly when it goes South. Better not forget fins. :)

Haha spot on we arrived a short while ago. As our 1149NM journey over three and a half days comes to a close, the wine has started flowing so I think you may be right, we won't be going anywhere tonight. I easily recognised the waypoint location on approach from your earlier posts, in fact I think we are in the same position as you were, tucked in below the low cliff. Perfect.

We've been in CF all day but will be out tomorrow - probably anchor in Guidi.
But will be back in to CF in time for the Sant Pietro Procession and fireworks.

We've now moved on from Marine Sifredi and anchored in what my chart calls Cala Grande, I'm guessing thats what MapisM calls Spiaggia Grande. We plan to move on to Menorca in the morning as it looks like a decent breeze from the East. It was great to meet those that I did; Deleted User, PeteM and, of course, Hurricane. Apologies to MYAG and MapisM (but to whom especial thanks for sorting our mooring), perhaps another time.

In the brief time we spent at the delightful port and town of Carloforte we were treated to dinner by our new best friend that we 'rescued' a few days ago with flat batteries in Porto Pino. He has kept his boat in the 'other place' for some time and knows the town well. His favourite restaurant is the 'osteria at the southern end of town, they were full so we went to Vittorio's - either place will serve you great tuna :)

For any you who missed it (I'd have to ask how!), heres the last 5-6 minutes of last nights fireworks...

They did say you weren't afraid to use the old girl when we met at the London boat show !

Top work, something to aim for.......

Henry :)

Posts are a bit quiet at the moment.
Weather is fantastic so we've all been out.
I'm back in CF - SWMBO just gone home for about a week.
Other boats are out at the moment.
MapisM suggested a spot yesterday where the swimming/snorkelling was the best I'd ever done.
Pics will probably follow later - if anyone is interested that is.

OK then

MYAG has arrived - their passage was a little short of 1200 miles - and just to be with us.

Weather good so we headed off to Guidi - again!!

Boys with their toys!!

It was Saint Peter's day - the island Saint Pietro so we headed back early to watch a religious procession through the streets of Carloforte which finished up as a procession of highly decorated boats round the harbour. Actually, we had a forum table booked for dinner so the thought of food and wine called us away from the procession early.
We did manage, however, to drag ourselves away to watch a fantastic display of fireworks from MYAG

Later, we all met up with MapisM to discuss the next day's boating.
The decision was to go to Mezzaluna.
MapisM said that this is one of the best places in the area to swim and snorkel.

I won't say much - I'll just post the pics and you can decide for yourselves.
Only to say, I can't think of anywhere with such beautiful scenery where such a small group of boats can anchor on their own. Most of the day, we had the bay to ourselves.
Snorkelling in and out of the caves was easy.

And here's a video - also courtesy of MapisM.
His little waterproof camera produces better videos than my GoPro.

And the locals round here certainly know how to motor!!

At the moment, I'm back in Carloforte on my own - the others are out on their anchors.
SWMBO flew home today for about a week when she will re-appear with some more visitors.
So, there are some little jobs to do - in the sun - with a few beers - oh what a life!!

Well that really looks like a fantastic place to drop the hook Mike/MapisM - planning next years trip now, this is very tempting, assuming I can get Coral Rae ready to mange the 200nm crossing. Reminder, must get the gennie working and better shed some weight......:D

You need to do some pootling tests, John.
Fill up at SC - do at least 50 miles at (say 8.5 knots in your case) - fill up again and do the range calcs.
I think you will be surprised how far she will go.

JW is still at least half full - last fill was Mahon - a month and a half ago.

You will need to build some kind of safety plan though.

I agree - We can catch-up when you're back to base. Will be going with another F43 (Keith) so should be fine. We have already done a few hundred miles together this year and well over 500nm on our trip last year, so it should make it...! All with normal contingencies and careful passage planning. Like the idea of running real load tests at pootling speed though to significantly increase the range, may do that later this year, top-up to full run at a steady pace just up on plane (formula gives about 8.5-9 knots but around 10 seems about right) log and top-up when back. Intend to take all of next June off work, perhaps Soller/Pollenca/Mahon then over to Calorforte, or a fuel stop just before :D

Nice pic of Team MM on the jetski, he will be happy now he's had a speed fix :)
LOL, you can say that again.
Actually, the acceleration of that thing is even more impressive than the speed.
I mean, yes, it is insanely fast, but you sort of expect that, while the acceleration is beyond belief!
Great fun indeed, thanks M for the ride.

Apologies for not having contributed a lot to the thread lately, but as Hurric said, the combination of hot weather, calm seas and great company is a fantastic incentive for NOT spending a lot of time at the keyboard.... :D

Here's just a few pics of the last days for the moment, with more to come, stay tuned!
Firstly, a couple of sunset shots. There might be better places to enjoy a sunset, but maybe I have a memory slip, 'cause right now I can't think of any.... :)

Completely different environment, but also not too shabby, imho!
