Sardinia Summer 2015

Made it as far as Sardinia, currently anchored at the back of Isola Rossa round the corner from Tuelada. Longish crossing from Pantelleria on a boat that'll do about 6 knots but we had a few hours of good wind to sail in :) which improves the average.

I've had no reply from the the SiFredi lot so either theyre full or dont want to talk about short term berthing. Current plan is to get around Cabo Tuelada tomorrow morning before the wind kicks off and go to Porto Pino, another place you really should visit whilst at Carloforte. The first officer reported a flamingo flyby early this morning somewhere in the Sardinian Channel so there may be at least 3 of them in the lagoon there. Then on to Carloforte on Saturday, 27th; hows the town quay looking, full up or are there spaces ?

Well, you are in a beautiful spot indeed.
I'm actually surprised that you found some coverage for data connection in that area, maybe they extended the network recently.
No later than one year ago, while anchored nearby (cala Zafferano, also stunning), none of the 6 mobiles that we had onboard could find any coverage...

Re. berthing in CF, I'd be surprised if they couldn't accomodate your boat at this time of the year.
It's more likely that they are just getting busier and are loosing the plot a bit with emails... :)
If you wish, just pm me the name/size of your boat and the dates you were considering for your stay, and I'll be happy to ring them and reconfirm you.
Afaik, you're not supposed to use the public quay for overnighting - also because the space available is very limited.

Just a quick post

Anchored in Guidi today.
This is a very safe anchorage.
Lots of sand and much more like the kind of anchoring that we are used to.
Large sandy bottom - good holding - 5 to 6 metres of water.
SWMBO and I swam to the beach and it would have been safe to anchor close in.
Certainly as close as we would be allowed without complaints from beach swimmers.

Here are a few pics from Guidi today.
There were a total of 4 boats anchored including us.
Most of the time only three of us.
And there was plenty of room for others.
An anchorage like this in Mallorca would be crammed full.

And here is one that I took from my GoPro camera.
This year, I bought one of those Seadoo sea scooters and I've fitted a GoPro mount onto it.
The underwater video that I took was a bit disappointing (I need to spend more time and work out how to use it).
This following GoPro still pic has been through Photoshop - it is nothing special but maybe it shows how beautiful Sant Pietro is so perhaps this pic deserves to be posted anyway.

LOL, pretty sure you won't be surprised to see me posting yet another clip made in the very same spot! :D

OTOH, after all scubaman asked to keep this stuff coming, so who am I to argue...?
...and btw, this was also made in October (as the Spiaggia Grande video), so he can prepare himself to the awfully crowded place and the miserable weather shown in both clips! :)

Quick en-route update from me for the Carlofortini. :) We're currently taking on fuel in at the infamous Reggio Calabria harbour (you need to count your fingers after shaking hands here). Cracking on after lunch so we should be arriving Sardinia sometime tomorrow and might anchor overnight in a bay somewhere depending on conditions before arriving Marine Sifredi. My experience with MS was good, they got back to me almost immediately so quite happy.

Any suggestion for a good bay to anchor overnight on the way?

See you all soon.....

Depending on how far you want to go the following day, either side of Cabo Carbonara (depending on the wind) are good anchorages in c. 5m on sand. We're now in Porto Pino just around the corner from Carloforte in 5m on sand - well protected from the NW

Just a suggestion but Villasimius marina on the SE tip of Sardinia is a very nice spot which would leave you about 70nm to make to CF tomorrow. I'm pretty sure that they could offer a berth for an 80 footer There are shops, restaurants and bars in the marina although I don't know how many will be open even at this time of year. There is an anchorage on the E side of Villasimius or you could drop the hook in the bay outside the marina entrance on the W side

Alternatively, if you want something more lively, you could overnight at one of Cagliari marinas (either Marina Karalis or Marina di Cagliari) which are right in the centre of the city. I wasn't entirely happy with security there when I looked at these marinas so probably best to leave somebody on board all the time

Thanks for the offer, I'll pm you.

The signal was a 2G TIM signal but surprisingly good for that, this thread took ages to load though - too many pics :) We have a fixed 4G capable MiFi (sort of) installation with an external antenna using a TIM SIM that I picked up on Sicily for the winter at the moment. We were seeing a 3G signal on TIM most of the way up to the headland, though at a 25% level, once we left the bay this morning. Now anchored in Porto Pino with a 3G signal around 20% but good enough for HSPA.

Nice tip for Cabo Carbonara, thanks. Prefer something nearer though, Guidi looks good.

Indeed Guidi is the best spot, if you wish to stay near CF.
It can only get a bit bumpy with southern wind - in that case, the nearest good alternative (with such wind) is Spiaggia Grande, the spot previously mentioned by Hurricane.
You can see it in the map of his post #308, just 3NM ESE of Guidi, along the coast of Sant'Antioco island.
See U on the 29th! :)

PS for RW: berth confirmed also for your boat, in the meantime - see PM.

+1 for Giuseppe and Carmela, marine sifredi the only place to be!

Spoke to Giuseppe this morning - he is expecting you and I think he is watching AIS - if you are transmitting.
Just checked Windguru which has been very accurate over the last couple of months.
It seems that there will be some wind from the NW and the WNW so Guidi should be comfortable.
If in doubt you can anchor exactly on MapisM's waypoint - in 6m of water - 39 05.9167 N - 008 17.9667 E
We had a good 30m of chain out and there was plenty of room to swing.
With that wind blowing, if you were to drag, you would only drag away from Sant Pietro - so it would be safe.
Alternatively, you might be able to contact Giuseppe for an early arrival - as I say, he is expecting you.

that front yard looked familiar....

Poor scubaman, he is going to hate having to extend his summer in the Med with you folks, all that warm clear water and sunshine...:)

Blimey C, you are good at spotting places where as I recall you've only been once, and very shortly!
Yes, indeed the first dozen of seconds in the video were taken from C & E garden, right between their home and the beach.
Btw, at the time of the video, they had not finished yet to clean and furnish that area, which is now absolutely stunning.
Up there among the best spots in the island for a g&t.
Or better yet, a mirto...! :D

Been watching the AIS
Seems that you are close to Cagliari this morning.
Hope you had a good crossing last night.

Yep crossing was fine thanks, we've just popped in to Carbonara to take on some fuel. Planning to take a slow cruise along the south coast for the rest of the day and anchor overnight somewhere ( thanks for the waypoint) and then marina tomorrow. Looking forward to this week.....

MapisM recommended the anchorages either side of Teulada (right at the southern tip of Sardinia (Porto Zafferano and Cala Piombo)
He reckons that you can anchor in the lee whichever side the wind is blowing.
Maybe this will be good for you and you can report back - we will probably head that way ourselves sometime during the summer.

Just in case you heard that around Teluada Cape there might be some restrictions (it's occasionally used as a NATO inter-force playground):
I just had a look at the Coast Guard bulletins, and it looks like nothing is up for today and tomorrow.
Occasionally, in the (stunning, highly recommended!) Cala Zafferano, you can still be approached by some grey boat with machine guns, even if there aren't any ongoing restrictions.
And they might ask you to move elsewhere - I never understood on which basis btw - but as long as you don't argue with them, they will not shoot you! :)
Enjoy the cruise, and see U soon!
