Sardinia in October (with vids)

Brilliant vid, quality is definitely getting better each time.

Always amuses me seeing the kids diving off your hard top. Perhaps you should put steps up to it and mount a diving board!

Whilst I understand the need for some anonymity / discretion its nice to see some pictures of of the JFM clan too (as it was the wonderfully bearded MapisM).

More like Uncle Albert ??
Or even Captain Birdseye;)

Oi, neither the sun nor the age managed to make my hairs and beard completely white.
Well, not yet, anyway! :nonchalance:

Ok folks, far from pretending to be better than scubaman in video editing, but I had more time than him during the weekend, because he was busy flying back home.
So, I put together the following video, trying to summarize all the places where we cruised (and flew, albeit just virtually!) during this week. A few bits are actually duplicated from the videos scubaman already posted, but others are brand new.
I hope you will enjoy this glimpse of summer.
If the viewing would be worth just 1% of how much we enjoyed living it, that would be more than enough to justify 4 mins of your time, I promise!

PS: as always, much better in full screen and HD resolution, if you have a decent bandwidth.

excellent work P, congrats to all of you cameraman included of course!
Amazing what a wide-angle and unexpected POV does to even boring bits like the rocks at the side of a beach. I'd not even consider taking a pic of them, but now they turn into something magical.

K., how easy is it to change/rotate the camera, or is the camera fixed and one does the 0-90 vertical whereas drone does the 360horizontal? I'm asking because it seems that on some plans (from the first video in the thread) the change from moving along an axis and turning is somewhat abrupt, not smooth enough. Is there some way to do it in the camera, or you edit the turns out? Can also do it with altering the speed of the turn (throttling it down) and up again once you're moving.
Can we also have a ballpark figure for the setup used in this shooting plz?

P, next time do remove the fenders please (although they are nice, round and both symmetrical and at the right height) :p I know not easy to store, but could put them on the salon for the shooting needs.
Where's the tender? I assume you do have a tender, no?

Finally, I searched but couldn't find the form to fill a request for invitation for next summer. Where are you hiding it?
:D

cheers

V.

Absolutely V, I couldn't agree more re. the POV.
For instance, even if I anchored a lot of times near the long and thin islet in the video (not to mention snorkel around it!), I never appreciated its real shape before I saw it in these clips.

Re. the fenders, LOL, I saw the comment coming. But you know, laziness is part of the local lifestyle...

Good idea re. the application form, I'll think about it... But you don't need to bother about it, just say when!
Btw, why don't you plan to take the opportunity for stretching MiToS legs next summer?
Regardless, my boat will always be open to anyone who loves wooden boats as much as you do! :encouragement:

Re. the quad functions, I got the gist of it while scubaman was handling it (and I also gave it a short try myself, without crashing the thing, phew!), but I'm sure that both himself and/or jfm will be able to address your curiosities more accurately!

Camera only moves up and down, the drone does the horizontal panning. So in a 'fly around' scenario, as in the beginning of the vid around the front of P's boat, you would keep the drone going sideways and then by changing the heading and the COG, make it do an arc. The abrupt corrections to the heading were my untrained fingers trying to keep the thing going sideways forward and panning (by changing heading and COG) to keep up with P's boat and do an arc at the same time (if any of this makes sense). Very annoying now that I look at it again, I've edited them out of the second version I'm updating in a moment... P kindly left the jerky bits out of his version :).

Jfm mentioned the at Point of Interest function which does the circle automatically but obviously not around a moving object. You can control it pretty much any way you wish, it only takes a bit of practice to achieve the soft touch to keep the results looking nice.

The Advanced version of the drone together with a backpack (strongly recommended for keeping the thing safe) and prop guards (which are useless) were around 1400€.

Your time was well spent, P! :encouragement:

I recognise those places. :D The shot of the "boat house" was fantastic!

thanks for the extracted invitation :p
you should do the application form though, or do a sort of air-bnh (as in boat 'n helm type of thing, or even boat-bnb)...

will only probably manage 120nm this season with MiToS and still got a list of things to do. Going from zero to hero and doing 1100nm to reach Sardegna is probably a bit too much don't you think?
I'd very much like to do something like that but it means kids leave high school (that's another 5yrs) and both myself and the wife take a sabbatical and find relevant unis in coastal areas along the way to combine leasure with business :D

May manage a short air visit at some point (probably not next year though, should be too busy enjoying MiToS tbh)

cheers

Excellent work gentlemen, fantastic footage of a stunning destination. Lots of great memories for myself as well.
I had a feeling SM was going to create something really impressive after a trip to Carloforte :)

Yep, coming to think of it, that's probably a bit of a stretch.
Also because I'm sure there's plenty of beautiful cruising grounds also much nearer to you.
But the offer, "extracted" as it might have appeared, remains valid! :)

Just realised I can't edit my original post anymore...

FWIW, here's the tidied up version of my original clip.

One revelation for me was how fluent editing videos in iPad's iMovie is. You can't do any color/contrast/etc. corrections to the clips but for quickly editing a movie with transitions and titles it's really very useable. With the optional Lightning SD card reader for the iPad, it was really handy to just plug in the card from the drone and do a quick movie while lounging of the sofa.

On a more general note on drones, they are quite clever and agile. Check out this video for instance.

That's great. Keep flying, the more you fly the better you'll get at playing with pan, tilt and all the other sticks. A combination can add a lot to the motion. Also flying in atti mode will generally produce better output as the drone doesn't constantly correct things. A polirised filter is also a must on above water.

Funny you should mention it, because I asked scubaman if he had one, and not only he didn't, but he told me that you can't fit any screw-on filter on the camera.
Then again, a polarising filter wouldn't make a lot of sense anyway, if you think about it: the reflection angle is constantly changing while the copter moves around, and you can't just rotate the filter by hand as you do with your camera, for very obvious reasons... :)
