Samphire ?

Hi,

Does anyone know where Samphier may be found growing on the South Coast between say, Eastbourne and Portsmouth ? Been buying it from Waitrose but it's expensive and flown in so would rather go out and pick som if poss.

I believe there is a bit on Samphire Hoe, between Folkestone & Dover.

Gathering wild samphire is illegal under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, if it involves removing plants.

It only requires the new tender green shoots to be cut off as the rest of the plant is woody.

Article on the southern news the other week on how the volume of "collectors" now exceeds the wild plants capacity and it is disappearing at an alarming rate from the wild.

It doesn't seem all that long ago that I read somewhere that the last professional collector had retired! Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall described it as a 'fearsomely trendy vegetable' back in 2007. It's nice to gather your own and have a generous helping without having spent a fortune. Always cut, never pull of course - same approach I apply to wild fungi.
