Now that Salty John has retired, the site has closed, and the Metz antenna no longer available, what is the best alternative to a Metz?

And if anyone has an unwanted Metz sitting on a shelf, please PM me.

Thanks Peter. I did Google first but couldn't find anything, must learn to Google better. Links much appreciated, makes a change for you to help me spend money, usually you help me save it?

Metz VHF aerial doubled in price since 2020!

Is it worth the current price?

I had one from Salty John but it got damaged.

Now they are about £154 ! ?
I paid about £60 at most years ago.
Which part of yours is broken?
From memory (I could be wrong) the body of antenna has lifetime guarantee?
Not sure I would pay that price now.
Sorry cant recommend an alternative but perhaps phone the people selling the Metz to see if guarantee still valid on your Metz?

Long gone. I think it was blown off in a winter storm.

So when you say damaged you mean the whole lot was blown away? I don’t see a lifetime guarantee on the linked antenna which may be indicative of something or other. Don’t know what your budget is or type of sailing (if sailing and not mobo - makes a difference), but if not going offshore and expecting to be in F9 and above I’d buy a decent but cheaper antenna and a good emergency antenna at the same time- but that is just my opinion. I have not had to buy an antenna in too many years to recommend one….. some younger person with recent experience will be along hopefully.

To be honest I can't remember what happened. I put a short stubby one in its place (not going far from shore) but for the project boat I'd like something better.

I have Metz on one seagoing boat SR25 - had trouble with the tapered cone part that grips the whip ... so much so that I left the previous rail mounted cheaper base loaded one piece antenna on stern rail ..

(I am now considering removing that second antenna and using it on another boat I have ... Primor24)

I have a non-Metz - no idea what brand - on my other seagoing boat Conq38 ... never had any trouble.

Is there a difference ? Without SWR - I have never noted any range or use difference ...

Some of the cheaper antennas use a vampire tap to connect the cable to the antenna.

Designed to be used once, but often made and remade which causes a poor connection - also need a special coax with a ferrule on the end to attach to the antenna.

For a bit more, I'd go for an antenna with a proper connector and coax from a specialist supplier.
