To celebrate Scotland's political coming of age we have decided to fly a Saltire in place of the Red Duster. Do any forumites know where we can purchase a suitably robust and correctly coloured flag for this purpose?

I wonder if this thread might polarize opinion somewhat? :D :D :D

If I didn't think you were on a wind up I'd say the letter "M" code flag should do fine. ;)
He is on a wind up, a non jock wanting to fly the saltire, I ask you what next. Never mind our opinion, perhaps the best advice is for him to go to France and fly it there, see what monsieur les douanes have to say about flying the wrong ensign!
Bit of luck he might get frog marched to a cash point!

How about a nice Red one with a saltire incorporated into the flag of the union in the corner?

There is a Scots red ensign:

This was flown by the Royal Scots Navy (or Old Scots Navy), which vanished with the Act of Union in 1707. I've never seen a boat flying this however, whereas lots of Scots boats fly the Saltire as an ensign.

If you can get one of those soon, we can then recognise you and keep you in scottish waters. Wether you'll let us in is another matter !!! (gunship diplomacy within a couple of years if alex has anything to do with it !!!!!)

The ensign flag co will sew you up a nice flag, all my ensigns and flags are bought from there, local company.

Seriously?
The frogs are quite serious about rules and regs and one of them is that uk reg boats must fly a red ensign. Webbie is just trolling along at the mo so dont take him too serious, he should really have put this in the lounge where we could have really gone to town on him!

Never been very sure of the provenance of this one (and Wikipedia does not count:)). However a couple of boats around here do like to fly it. At least the sky blue is correct rather than the dark blue of Flag "M".

Yes its Wikepedia. I could edit it to say that the Ensign was purple with yellow spots. It does not make it true:o. A web search for a Scots Ensign always come back to this single Wikepedia entry.

Contemporary illustrations and models all show Scots ships such as the Great Michael wearing the saltire.

Eitherway if it makes some owners happy to fly a Scots "Red Ensign" (or Welsh, Cornish etc) let them.

I've raced to France a million times and we never put an ensign up when we arrived. Nor did anyone else. Are you sure there's a fine? How much?

While I do not want to get drawn into an ensign debate, it might surprise some of you to know that ensign identification is perhaps not as clear cut as you are claiming. For example, members of the Royal St. George Club at Dublin (in the Republic of Ireland) still cheerfully cruise worldwide proudly wearing a defaced (with a crown) version of the red ensign. There are other similar anomalies elswhere but this is one of the best examples I can give you.
Webby will be assured of a warmer welcome in many places in Europe (and particularly in Carnlough, where he will escape the stoning) once he starts to wear his Saltire, he will be able to buy one in the gift shop in Oban just beside the 'see you Jimmy' wigs.
