I replied to your first request for info and deleted the post when you moved the goal post...I'm now a bit suspicious of you. Sorry but there it is, perhaps you'd like to tell us a bit more before we commit to answering?
nothing dodgy about the postiing I can assure you. The whole idea of what Sailtime is proposing seems sound and viable, however with a lot of these scheems once you scratch beneath the surface its not as good as first thought. I would just like to hear from someone who is either a member or perhaps had some experience with sailtime. Not a lot to ask really.
Dear Kilter, I do not know what you are talking about, maybe you could let me know if you know anything at all about the "Sailtime" scheme or not. If not, then I'm sure that someone else will be able to give me the info I need.
Dear Surfwizard, are you always pompous? You've had a fair amount of advice on your previous post, did any of it help? If you define your request it helps people to respond, it also helps if you get the company right, e.g Sunsail / Sailtime!
Dear Kilter, do you know about Sunsail or Sailtime?? If not, I suggest you go to bed, because that is where I'm going. I'm sure that someone will be able to answer this very simple question - DOES ANYONE KNOW ABOUT "SAILTIME"? If so, I would love to have a sensible answer, please!!!
I looked in to it last year, promoted heavily by Ancasta, It looks to me more like a franchised business, they get to sell you yachts. I concluded that, cost wise per sailing weekend it works out the same as any other charter, as all these various schemes do.
Dear Sailtime, yes I do but that does not mean I will go to bed with you! You have forfeit a sensible answer from me so go where you will, old thing! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Dear Kilter, I didn't realise this was a game where forfeits were involved. Never mind, I will have to live now not knowing what your knowledge was on this subject, .....
I guess it depends on whether you want to be an owner-member or a normal member. From the perspective of becoming a normal member it it seems quite straight forward, however you should do your sums and compare the cost per sail to that of simply chartering. A quick check shows that it'd cost about 540 quid per month to get approximately 4 days (not necessarily on the weekend). Personally, I think its a nice idea but with 8 to a boat its well overpriced compared to chartering.
I visited SailTime on their first boat during their launch weekend a few years ago.
All seemed above board with earnest people behind the scheme, though the proprietor seemed a bit green and did not know his pushpit from his pullpit! Suspect he was downsizing from a more conventional career in the home counties.
Their training scheme seems like a sales scam, basically they want to sell shares and the training assessment is to filter out complete incompetents.
Their first boat was well equipped and last time I looked they were up to 3 or 4 Solent boats which equates to nice organic growth. Be aware that the Solent Beneteau agent might hold shares in some boats which allows them to operate low cost demo vessels.
The economics of the scheme look so attractive from the operator's perspective I thought about starting a copy cat business. The scheme probably makes sense to cash-rich/time-poor people who cannot commit to more than a year of boat ownership. While I was on the boat an airline pilot visited and a newly retired couple who were dipping their toe into boat ownership.
If you can commit to 3 years of boat ownership and are not a complete rookie then a 1/4 share in a private syndicate would offer a lot more sailing for a similar investment.
I am Sailtime, and we run a fantastic programme for sailors from beginners to yachtmasters. At Hamble we are now 6 boats including power and at Lymington 2 boats. For next year we are adding a Beneteau 40 footer and a 32 power boat. Typically as a member you are paying about 1/4 of the cost of owning a similar boat. The boats are highly speced, new and the great part is that you do the sailing and we take care of the rest. We have a max of 8 people sharing one boat , we operate all year round and that equates to about 6 weeks access a year. That is more than the average private owner would use his boat! You book your use online allowing you to design your own sailing programme including eerything from an evening sail to a solid week and anything in-between. Many of our members gain qualifications, experience and confidence with us, going on to buy their own boats. You are able to use your time on the boat to have personal Instruction to gain RYA Day skipper or higher. Members have proved themselves to be highly responsible, recognising the importance of gaining the skill set and experience necessary to sail an expensive, quality boat with confidence. as a result enjoyment soares. consequently our boats remain in fantastic condition. We have Owner Members who have purchased our boats because they could not believe the excellent condition our 3 year boats are maintained in. Believe me, maintaining boats to the standard that we do is not cheap.
We will never be right for every one but I strongly recommend that you come to take a look at us. We are at the London Boat Show in January (Stand N438) where we will be delighted to not only provide you with a nice cup of coffee or tea but also give you the opportunity to meet existing members who will be helping at the Show and are our best advocates.
Regards, Richard
