Back in the day I did a lot of bluewater crewing. All found on board and travel expenses as a minimum and usually some kind of beer money. Without travel I wouldn't have been able to do it - and I like to think I was a useful hand to have onboard.
On my own boat, it's only friends and family who crew and they are my guests so don't pay for anything (although I do find it hard to buy a beer ashore).
For a longer trip, if I needed the help of strangers then I would also bung 'em a couple of hundred at the end of the trip - subject to them not being total wankers of course - to show my appreciation for their assistance.
