Sailing to EU from UK with US passport

Hi,
I need some guidance. Soon we might be sailing to Channel Islands and Cherbourg and returning to the UK with a US citizen on board. UK flagged vessel. What rules would apply to him ? Would he need to get a visa for each place we visit ?
