Strap your knife of choice to your person, life preserver etc., surely you need it where you are?

Yep. A good clasp knife of your choice, but on a lanyard around your neck. Always, whenever you're on board. (No reason not to have others dotted around the place too if you want, of course.)

Prefer anything round my neck to have a safety breakaway. I tie my knife to my belt/trousers.

I have a leatherman on my belt (as does about half the crew) and we have one of the yellow safety knives above strapped to the kicker.

I have used my leatherman in anger to cut ropes on a handful of occasions (most frequently when corporate crews get over excited and get riding turns) and we have used the knife on the kicker 3 times in anger whilst I've been aboard. They cut Dynema under tension like a hot knife through butter. One slash and it's gone.

I think a knife for sailing is very over rated.......I don't think I have ever needed a knife in anger (emergency) in my little boat in 35 odd years. (and about 5 dismastings) .....

Sounds like you'd be better off spending the knife money on some rig checks!

Oh, you can get them. All the govt agency ID badges on lanyards have breakaway clips on them. And they're on a ribbon too, rather than a cord, so they're more comfortable.

I confess to having worn a sheath knife on my belt for years. But that was ashore, not afloat where a slicker might hinder access at just the wrong time.
