As the person who posted the original quote, I am going to add my comments. I stand by my statement - sailing is easy. I have been sailing since my early teens, and the simple mechanics and principles of sailing a boat can be learnt very quickly. However, I did not say that you could quickly learn to sail a yacht to a standard to cross oceans. It takes time to learn boat handling, navigation and all of the other aspects of being a yachtsman. You also cannot get experience very quickly - learning how your boat handles in different weather and sea conditions.
The original statement should also be taken in context - it was as a reply to a question as to whether it was better to travel from Australia to Europe in a motor yacht or a sailing yacht. My reply was to say thet the sailing part was easy - it is everything else that takes the time, and most of the "everything else" applies to both power and sail.
