We are having a heatwave. Was due to sail a friends yacht this afternoon with the wind forecast to freshen. However, he phoned me yesterday to say that his house plumbing had sprung a big leak. Plus his bike had fallen on him and he had cracked a rib. I've decided to call him 'Lucky Alan'.

So I called another oppo and we took his yacht out this morning. There is a heat warning in place for the eastern Canary Islands. And it was hot. Heat haze obscuring Fuertaventura just ten miles away. Sea state calm and just very light wind.

Betty Swallocks. No shade. However, the sheer enjoyment of a couple of hours teasing 2 knots boat speed in very light airs made it very enjoyable.

Having spent a lot of sailing time in a different commercial world, it's a delight to be able to arrive, prep boat and be off in fifteen minutes. Makes short sails fun!

Highly recommended. ?

Sir now you are just rubbing it in to those of us who are about to get the thermals and waterproofs out.

I assure you I am not a little jealous, I am a lot.

Interesting to hear of heat haze being a possible cause of misjudging risk of collision..I have read that scenario in some in big old blue books, but have never seen it over the sea. Sandstorms are also mentioned. Imagine being on an old rust bucket in the S.Med or Red Sea, and being part of the rust-chipping team. Then a huge sandstorm blast you from all directions, and takes the vessel down to clean metal, ready to paint! Prayers of thanks would go up to heaven?
Teasing her along in light airs is most relaxing indeed, it just chills one out.

I thought that it was cider in Devon.
Spot-on, definitely cider. Best drunk in jolly company, round a fire out in the country. I don't normally venture inland, but if you get up early on a cold morning, the winding, hilly country roads look like a Scalextric track driving my 205. Devon is very cosmically beautiful and contains some characters. Sailing in Plymouth Sound is interesting

I'm a beer and whisky drinker. Not a fan of the cider.
Here you go then

I've been watching the Dartmoor Whisky Distillery with interest. I can get my favorite Highland Park 12 year old for about £33 a bottle. The Dartmoor stuff would need to be very special, I don't rate the Highland Park 18 year old even though it wins all the prizes.

I can PM you the address of the boatyard if you would like to send a bottle over for 'evaluation'. It might be worth having on the boat to share with my French friends in Brittany when I'm next over. They insist I drink the Breton Eddu Whisky when I visit. Let's say I would not offer it to my worst enemy, but they are very proud of the product and I would never wish to offend my lovely Breton friends.
