I Have heard a few good tales about sailing in this part of the world ...has anyone had experience sailing in Croatia? ..what are the bets routes how long would you need to explore all the nooks and crannies , what are the expenses like , useful destinations, ..Would it be posiblle to spend an entire year sailing here, are there places to stay during winter ..

Apoligies about all the questions, but i know nothing about this area.

Dave

subject has been well investigated in several threads before, if you do a search you will find a lot of informations, I am sure the panel will be glad to answer specific questions anyway

Expenses: kept down by anchoring rather than using marinas.
Best routes: the ones that avoid the crunchy bits
Useful destinations: depends what you want to do - eat, stock up on beer, catch a flight, visit historic bits and bobs, find shelter. So, get lost: some of the best bits of Dalmatia are the least well-known ones. Get a good pilot book. Read some history of the area: it'll give you a better insight into this fascinating area, bits or all of which have come under Hungarian, Austrian, German, French, British, Italian, Venetian, Yugoslav, Turkish, Russian, Ragusan control... (Have I missed anyone?! oh, the pirates from Senj). And that's just in recent times...
Over-wintering: plenty of marinas with travel-lifts to be had.
A few pointers: avoid August if possible: it's getting to be crowded. Keep a watch on the weather as sudden squalls or the bora wind are always possible.
Have a peep at some of the sites I list and come back to me if you've any more specific questions!

Yup, done it a few times, in everything from flat calm (2003) to blowing a hooley (2001). And yes, it's nice here, although I wish it were a little warmer in winter! Ma no se pol aver tuto!

I tried it in 2002. We sailed from Ravenna at 19:00. After a stormy night we arrived at Trieste in the morning and guess what...Bora: not at it's usual magnitude but still right on our face! In any event the regatta is quite fun but never participate with your own boat. We had an aluminum hull (not a sailing boat... a dreadnaught)and beileve me it works: everybody just does all that is in their power to avoid you.
