We chartered in Turkey last year, and were told by the charter company to avoid goung from Bodrum across to Kos, because if anything went wrong with the yacht, the shore-team wouldn't be allowed into Kos to fix it!!

Now whether that was because the yacht was Turkish-flagged, I really don't know.

A few years ago i used to live in Rhodes and when any Turkish flagged boat came in they used to lay a big welcome mat down on the quayside and pour gallons of detergent on it for people to walk on before stepping foot on Greek soil! Tensions were running a little high at the time. There is still a deep underlying animosity between the greeks and the Turks (but only as far as I can ascertain from the Greek side!) but things are certainly better now than they were.

I think, practically it will all depend on where in Greece you land and when. If you don't want any hassle and are just 'calling' turn up during siesta and you'll probably find that the Port police are all sleeping.

Try and learn a few words of Greek from the trusty phrase book. It works wonders unless you manage to find a jobsworth in which case be prepared for buying a cruising log and having lots of forms to fill in. Most of the police can't be bothered with the hassle of paperwork especially in the smaller ports of entry where it's just a couple of cops and no Senior Officers to chase them....

Good luck and happy sailing.
