Whilst I have no interest in a motor verses sailing debate there is room for all. I find it very difficult and almost intimidateing trying to avoid dingy races across channels, zipping in and out of moorings so as you never see them untill they are crossing your bow.In fact they seem to take up most of Chichester harbour with no contol or restraint.

I am aware of col. regs etc but they seem to aim at you , you take avoiding action and another one tries to get you, its like a game of dare.I EVEN HAD TO TAKE AVOIDING ACTION WHILST EXITING THE MARINA as the boats where zipping across the narrow channel to their club house,(MANNERS) Is there any control of where they can set up their races , if so why do they always seem across the main channels. Touchy one this I think, Its just that I spent my whole trip today dodgeing looping and going dead in the water . Quetion is there rules and if so who is supposed to be enforceing them.

You were lucky !!

Today on the river severn we had to deal with "Rowers" - they do 6 mph with no wash and then wave at you if you have the smallest wake and to top it all most of 'em dont look where they are going - facing the OPPOSITE bleeding direction ......

Do what I do when going into Chichester (I am berthed there) use all the Sound signals you can, they think you are being really odd when you blast your horn 3 times and then smuggly say that your engines are going astern/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif It is also great fun because they are all shouting at you saying "What have I done" "Why are you blasting your horn" e.t.c

Sail races usually follow a triangular course, one side will be into the wind and require lots of tacking, a second side will usually be a broad reach (wind on /around beam) and the third side will be a run(wind aft) when the spinnies come out. Sometimes it may be a straight up and down course....one way against the wind(tacking) and the other way with wind aft, spinnies out etc.
If you can get familiar with this it helps with predicting what they are likely to do and how best to get through. Quite often, trying to give way to them may actually complicate matters as they were probably asessing how best to avoid you on the assumption that you would stand on.
Most mobo people dont realise just how quickly a dinghy can tack and they can come terrifyingly close sometimes with total control and a last minute change of direction will leave you seeing their transom rapidly receding into the distance again.

I would think that whilst trying to enter or leave a harbour/marina you are considered to be of restricted manourverability and smaller vessels crossing the main entrance/channel must keep clear. It reminds me of an incident a number of years ago when a local trawler returning home passed straight through a number of yachts awaiting the starting gun at the entrance to Dunlaoire harbour. When the club member attacked the trawler skipper on the quay shouting "dont you realise that power gives way to sail"the skipper replied "the entrance to a harbour must remain clear at all times "

I was talking to a lifeboat crew recently. When called out on shouts now, after years of expecting them to show at least a little sense when a lifeboat is heading out, they've given up trying to avoid dinghy racers. They just power through ,and leave them to get out of the way or face the consequences

<hr width=100% size=1>Err, let me know if Depsol enters the forum, I'll go and hide

I brought up this exact point at a regional RYA meeting about 2 years ago and asked if the sailing courses covered the navigation in restricted channels and harbours. Answer no and they felt it wasn't worth passing on to the training devision. Result the RYA dont give a toss about safety in the harbours they only want to promote the sailors and grab the money. Best to try complaining to the harbour master though you'll ptrobably find he's in the pocket of the local club's as well.

Me thinks these people are all of the one and only thought, Power gives Way , you can see it in the ,I dare you looks especially the young ones .I would not think they are taught anything other than that,Talking in the pub Dell quay yesterday the general feeling is as we in DQ are hemmed in by two schools who take over most of the water just plough through them!.This would then lead to bad tempers etc.I feel information and cooperation might be a better solution and rule enforcement from the harbour teams.

I shall write to the harbour master in Chichester an article ina magazine might shame them into doing some thing toward equal shares and responsibiliy.
Crossing our bow at the marina was the worst episode by Chichester Yatch club
But you do get fools zipping out of Itchenor between moored boats.

Re: SAILING CLUBS chichester

Chichester seems to suffer this the most, (when I had a boat...) I was brought to a dead stop as one tacked in front, and one behind - the third seemed to aim for my hull (allthgough with his sales up I doubt he could see me) so I goosed the power to get out of his way and swamped the one behind. Great shouts of "OY!" until the one who almost ran into me ran into them - that took two dinghys out of the race...
