Does any one have any recommendations for a good sailing club for cruisers in the Portsmouth / Hayling Island area? Not really into racing having never done any, just like going to different really places, also would like improve my sailing skills and do some trips in the company of other boat as we don’t really know anyone else with a boat.
Cheers Andy

Port Solent Yacht Club (www.psyc.uk.com) must be the best value on the Solent at less than £20.00 per year membership fees. They arrange rallies every other weekend from Easter to October both around the Solent and further afield (Brighton, Gosport and Cross Channel).

I have to confess some bias as I am one of the Read Commodores!

I agree with 'thaigh'. I am an 'ex' member of CYC (because of where I live now) they run a great 'cruising progamme' each year, both short and long cruises, also to help improve your sailing skills, they also run a few 'cruiser races' which add to the fun of sailing. I am please to say I still have many friends at CYC.

Like the OP we were considering looking for a local club so the posting is of interest, as one poster suggested had a look at CYC, wow, the fees, £355 for the year + a £365 joining fee, is the the normal level of YC fees?

My thoughts exactly, it does seem a little bit pricey. The other clubs I have looked at seem to be between £100-140pa for a family membership and a one off £100 joining fee.

Have you considered the Hardway sailing club on the Gosport side? Its just up from the Royal Clarence.

Hardway .... handy pontoon, good food, cheap booze (very!) ........ nice clubhouse/showers etc (nothing flash but ok) ... really good breakfast at weekends. Fees about £60 a year + joining ... you need to apply for entry form now to get an interview in Jan/Feb ... very very informal and nothing to worry about and you'll get in if you've got a boat. Look at their website - google Hardway Sailing Club - which explains everything. Costs £5 per night to use the pontoon for members, I think £10 for non-members. Bit noisy one Saturday night per month with music in the bar but there's a good pub just down the road, The Jolly Roger (!) and a very good Chinese TA 5 minutes walk. Also very handy if you have a Gosport Boatyard swinging mooring, water taxi goes from next door ...... the club has its own moorings which are very cheap but you have to row out ... and there's a waiting list. The whole lot is 15/20 minutes from the harbour entrance. Definitely no old f@rts in blazers or pink gin!

The Guildford Coastal Cruising Club is very friendly, rallies in summer (mainly Solent, with a few Poole etc and a crosschannel), talks in the winter but these are in Guildford! I can't recall what single membership is, but joint is £30 a year.
