Anywhere convenient. I was able to put mine directly below the GI and consumer unit. Easier to do if you are starting from scratch, but location is not critical provided the electrical connection is sound.

So no inverter, no generator.

I will do as you say and disconnect the GI, reconnect the earth.

Then, as a winter project, upgrade with the button anode, GI before the consumer unit, etc when the boat is ashore.

Any comment on location of the Button anode, or can it go anywhere convenient below the waterline?
Good plan. Fit the anode anywhere convenient.
 
I can drill a hole and fit a new stud to mount the anode

One thing is that there's no indent in the back of the anode to allow for a nut.

I thought the stud would have a backing but, nut on the hull behind the anode, and a nut to clamp the anode on.

If there is no middle nut is there a danger of the anode corroding and allowing the stud to loosen?
