Sail to Power DaySkipper Conversion

I noticed on the RYA site it is possible to do a conversion course between Sail and Power Yachtmaster, but is it possible to do the same at Dayskipper level (i.e. do a reduced length Power Dayskipper course)?

In terms of course experience I have done the comp crew course, Day Skipper sail, Powerboat up to Intermediate level, First Aid & VHF. I also have some hours logged in larger displacement cruisers and own a 5m RIB.

I am planning to do my Advanced Powerboat this summer, but wondered if I could squeeze in a Dayskipper course over a long weekend too?

Whilst there aren't that many places that charter motor cruisers, those that do seem to require DS Power to charter a motor cruiser, so I believe I need an RYA certificate for that.

The simple answer is no. Day Skipper power courses are run over 4 days and on motor cruisers normally with twin engines. The Powerboat scheme is for smaller boats.

While it is possible to do a sail-power Yachtmaster conversion there is still a requirement to have a minimum number of miles 1,250 on a motor cruiser

Lisa, Day Skipper sail is actually a 5 day course, not 4 as it is for power which is the course you did.

The reason is that there is a requirement to do a minimum of 100 miles on a Day Skipper, this takes longer on a sailing vessel. Power Day Skipper also tends to return to base each day, whereas sail DS does not.

I've completed the Dazed Kipper sail theory course myself Lisa and one thing of note, where I suspect the extra day comes in, is the length of time it takes to approach something such as a hazard. The periods of doing nothing before getting to deal with something must add up to a day I reckon. This short video depicts the scenario quite nicely

I guess you were joking, but for clarity the theory course is identical for power and sail - you usually get both types of people on the courses.
