Here in Oz sail numbers are only required for racing. (Yachting Australia affiliated) Most dinghy classes will issue a number which effectively goes with the class logo to identify. Where as in my case there is no class association and generally for keel boats the club issues the sail numbers. As numbers are extremely hard to get off cleanly from an old sail it is desirable to use existing numbers. However it will need a club prefix before or above the number. When I first joined East Fremantle YC I went to the club office who keep the register and the dear lady asked what I wanted. I asked for the lowest number available. Ended up with EF1 no complaints, possibly occasional envy from other members. Current main sail is so old now numbers are faded blue. Also has a class(model) insignia.
However the government provide and insist on a hull number seen on port stern area for registered boats. (all with or capable of engine) ol'will

It's much the same in the UK. There's no requirement for sail numbers except for racing, and one-design racing boats are issued with them by class associations; numbers for handicap racing are issued by the bodies such as the RYA, RORC and CYCA. But lots of us like to have an identifying mark on our sails. Mine came with the boat - the first owner was an ardent racer - but I think anyone can apply for one from the RYA.

Thread revival. My boat is over 70 years old, a one-off, with no number on the main. I can’t find any record or pictures of a sail number in the past. I’ve never had a boat without a number! It feels odd. I’ll probably get a new main this year, and as I understand it I can put any old number up. What should I do? Post code? Last three digits? Blood group? I think RYA will issue a random number if I ask them but that’s a bit dull. Can I have 5446?
Maybe your phone number. Then anyone who hasn’t already scraped your data could contact you.

I got news from the RYA
In-sequence number (the next available number) £30

Out of secuence (your choice):

4 digits: £225
3 £510
2 : £1021
1 : £2000

Big money for fancy number/s, considering is non transferable. Hey -ho, if that is what is worth, it means somebody has already pay it before.

I dont know the CYCA. I would imagiine same type of bussines.
Indeed, when applying for mine, 850X was available for £510 which I rather fancied for my Cobra 850... but it went most of the way towards the cost of a job which has been rather more useful.
I opted for 5590L (5590 is also my GP14). I was given the 'early issue' rate of £45; that's for numbers that are within a couple of hundred digits of the current sequence. I'm not sure of this is standard or concessionary.
