When I finally got an answer from VP, they told me to use engine oil in my 130S (which replaced a 120S) even though the gearbox was unchanged. I decided to ignore them, am I wrong?

Are you using ATF? That does seem an odd choice by Volvo for a relatively simply frictional direct drive like a gearbox or sail drive. ATF obviously has it's place in auto-gearboxes or power steering systems when a thinner liquid is needed for the non-friction viscous coupling but in a friction-reliant system I would have thought that something of higher viscosity like 20/30 engine oil or 70/90 gear oil (which are both similar viscosities) would always have been more suitable.

Maybe I should have said geography classes...

"The Isle of Man and the Bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey are not part of Great Britain, they are not part of the United Kingdom and neither are they part of the European Union. They are self-governing British Crown dependencies."

:)

Yes i am fully aware of that but I wanted to make sure i went outside the isle of white - which people tend to pass to the north:encouragement:
And-- if one wants 8 weeks away sailing on ones own it helps to meet the wife & daughter in st peter port for a few days with a short hop to St helier for them to do some therapeutic shopping
plus if you have a friend in cherbourg who you only see once a year it seems useful to kill 2 birds with one stone

And of course i have a few friends who rib me about not going round the top of scotland so i always throw the Channel Islands in for luck

The oil specified for 120S, 120S-B, 120S-C and 120S-D was and still is SAE 15W-40 engine oil

The oil specified for all 130S drives was changed from ATF to 15W-40 engine oil in 2010

The correct oil for any combination of 120, 120S-B, 120S-C and 120S-D and 130S upper and lower gearboxes is therefore SAE 15W-40.

However I thought your engine fitted the 120S-E drive for which 75W-90 GL5 gear oil was, and still is, specified .

If that is the case and you now have the original 120 upper gearbox and a 130 drive leg I would have opted for 75W-90 gear oil. But if VP say to use engine oil then use engine oil. but not ATF!

WTF has this to do with SD oil?

Surely this post must fall foul of whatever new rule leads to the removal of posts elsewhere on the grounds that it "Adds nothing to the original enquiry"

VicS apologies for the thread drift but if you are sad enough to read the whole post you will see how it developed.
It all came from my assertion that one needs to take care changing the washer to the plug

But come on - lighten up - please do not ban me-- i have already had one thread decimated by the moderator as you know only too well

( now watch while we drift off even further with comments about moderators!!!!!)

Back to the oil-- If one goes to a Volvo Penta dealer ( Volspec for instance)they have a wall chart showing the recommended oils for all drives & one does not have to take the risk of incorrect comments/advice of forumites ( should they make any I might add)

It amazes me how many times forumites ask on the forum for opinion/advice when they only need ask the manufacturer
( there! now you have the lead for yet another thread drift - just to wind Vic S up--:encouragement:)

I don't think I said anything about ATF, I'm using 75W-90 GL5 as per the original specification. I don't think VP thought it through properly, which is why I ignored their email.

I am sure you discussed this on the forums after you replaced the drive leg and that continuing to use 75W-90 was the conclusion reached.
