Sail 8 failed?

Re: sail 8 failed

What Trafalgar re-enactment?

I thought it was the Reds & the Blues chucking Fireworks at each other. I assimed it was Man. U & Chelsea Fans having a bundle.

Re: sail 8 failed

Regardless of the validity of the cause; am I the only one who resents being lectured on world poverty by a group of rock-stars with multi-million pound incomes, fast cars, many houses and in some cases private jets. A number of sayings come to mind - eg about people who live in glass houses. Thought the gig was quite good though...

Re: sail 8 failed

would have '' a day off work, gathering in village, town, city centres, not uttering a word, just standing, staring''
got not only attention, but also affected the economies of the 8 member states, dawn of the dead type scene.

Re: sail 8 failed

I see that reports say the stars maintained their usual lavish backstage lifestyles with goody bags and exotic food/drinks. I think the whole thing was a mockery, how many people would have attended a concert to "raise awareness" if it was unknowns and mediocre acts? Very few I would think - it was just a one day pop festival and probably affected G8 as much as the Isle of Wight festival. It was on par with a "Charity Ball" with a champagne breakfast.

The whole business is just a reflection on the affluent West salving their own conscience by spending money on themselves so that they don't feel so bad about doing nothing.

Re: sail 8 failed

No, I don't think you are alone in your resentment. In many ways I agree with you.

The simple fact that we are discussing the whole event here means that it has succeeded & that is a good thing.

Re: sail 8 failed

so u think it's fair the already very rich get 7000 pound goody bags for turning up at live 8?

Re: sail 8 failed

There seems to be an awful lot of people on here obsessed with money. I thought Live8 was a free event. One would assume that any Goody Bags & other enticements were paid for by volunteers who knew what they were doing.

Were they giving away your money?

Were they waisting funds earmarked for the needy?

Get a life. Stop being so mean spirited & admit that at least they did something. Rather than whining on the internet & running down anyone who tried!

Re: sail 8 failed

Bigmart . . . don't get too stressed . . .

We all know there are a lot of rich grippers on here who are looking for ways to appease their nagging consciences because a tiny part of their mind is telling them that perhaps they have not acquired all that money and those nice boats in a totally guilt-free non-exploitive manner.

What I can't understand is why they all feel obliged to raise their heads above the parapet whenever this or similar topics are raised and attempt to justify their own insularity with a load of oversimplified arguments involving stereotypes and sweeping generalisations.

What I would say to the likes of Woody et al is: If some of us are stupid enough to stay (relatively) poor rather than compromise too much then why not leave us alone? Your argument that it won't work so why bother is hardly likely to cut any ice with us seriously deluded types who still believe that there is some hope for the human race. If you have a negative attitude then keep it to yourself.

Re: sail 8 failed

iam not to sure if we r both on the same level really, all i was trying to say was that its flipping unfair that the famous get these goody bags worth 7000 pounds each.
Maybe its branding?

Re: sail 8 failed

Well said. The number of bigoted and prejudiced comments on these forums about third world aid, G8, Live8 etc etc is quite incredible for a bunch of people I'd thought were well educated and intelligent.

I've reached the point where by and large I cannot be bothered to respond to largely ignorant comments about it none of the above being worthwhile as any aid efforts will be wasted, and all asylum seekers just looking for streets paved in gold, tax benefit overpayments being responsibility of those who have unwittingly received them, musicians at Live8 not ever having made charitable donations etc etc.

The ignorance displayed in some of the comments is beyond the boundaries of my blood pressure to even attempt to put some perspective on the comments made

View from the Sail 8 event

Whole thing was uncanny, I was the skipper of the only motorboat to go there and back. We had three yachts for company, at least at either end. The yachts had to make night passages to do the job, we were able to leave France much later this morning.

The weather was a bit bloody getting across for all concerned, much easier today.

What did it all prove:

a) that most boatowners have their smarts about them - a lot would not have enjoyed the weather on Friday night/Saturday...the sea conditions were certainly stronger than slight on the English side. Those that left and turned back probably made a good judgement call. Ditto those that stayed behind.

b) despite all of the slightly emotional at times alerts by the authorities, and even talk on Five Live of lifeboats, extra rescue helicopters and so on being on standby, no-one got rescued, towed, or whatever. That's the second time in a week (T200 being the other) when the leisure boating community has proven itself to be safer in its approach than the more sceptical standpoints would have anticipated.

c) there were no French people in Cherbourg Marina to transport (not even the illegal immigrants that many thought would materialise). There was a lot of understandable navel fluff being examined about the likelihood or otherwise of boatowners wanting strangers aboard but no-one debating it on the forums really raised the issue about whether individuals would want to step on small craft for an open sea crossing of 70 miles!

d) Sail 8 has already been termed a disaster, a damp squib, and any number of other similar expressions in the press I've seen. I've just got home and although it's disappointing in many respects that there weren't many participants I'm more than happy that a lot of interest was created and that the worst publicity that could be thrown was purely to do with low volume of participants. I started off assisting with this project, by creating the registration page, as a result of a direct request to do so, but wound up happy to have a played a more active role on the day. We had a nice dinner in France last night and I've just stepped out of a bath and into clean clothes at home...all of a sudden I find myself not wishing to take those things quite so for granted as was certainly the case before.

Re: View from the Sail 8 event

the expression - its better to have loved and lost is better than not having loved at all - is probably known to all

r u saying 'its better to have tried and found no one interested in this geldof invasion, than not to have agreed it was a good idea to start with and undertaken this token to display your support'

cos a lot of ppl here in uk didnt think it was a good idea - and most frogs didnt even get to hear of it, and by the sound of it if they did they didnt think much of it as an idea'

and at the risk of putting my head above the parapet, I didnt think is was either a good idea or sensible ....... and without shaundenfroid I wasnt surprised when it seems to have ended up a damp squib
